225 Oil Pressure?

    Quick question, what is oil pressure supposed to be on the 225? I'm just getting mine running and wondering if gage is wrong, if pressure is too low, or if the 225 just doesn't have a lot of pressure. Thanks.

    Worthy of a new post, I'd say.

    Rule of thumb for all engines is a minimum 10 PSI per 1000 in RPM. Typically idle pressures are higher than that though.

    FSM says 33 lbs at 2400 rpm. mine have been 15-20 at idle. When it gets hot out ( 90 degrees) the idle pressue will drop to 10-15 lbs. I went to 20-50 oil and that gets idle pressure back up to 20 lbs and low idle. Larry

    FSM calls for straight 30w.

    before i added the hi-vol oil pump, i had about 12psi at idle.

    My original owners manual calls for several different weights, depending on climate/ temp.
    Mine runs ~15-18 at idle warm, and 35 or 40 running down the road, above 1000RPM.

    I think mine is around 13-15 at idle warm, so it's right in there it sounds like. I'll check it when I'm above idle and see what it's at. Thanks for the help guys.

    Mine runs what Patrick's runs with a stock oil pump but I installed the girdle plate.

    Probably have an end tolerance out of spec. It's not a throw a gasket on it type of thing and a previous owner may have done that.

    Order a T/A Performance shim kit and the tolerance instructions comes with inside. Check the gear side clearance with a feeler gauge.

    I don't know if the 231 Oddfire is different but I get 50psi cold and 30psi warm crusing and 15-20psi warm at idle. Does this sound right?

    My newly acquired Dauntless is not running yet, but I would be tickled to have that oil pressure. I think it is very good.

    When I fired up my newly rebuilt 225 a few years ago I was concerned because the oil pressure was very low. I changed the spring in the pump to a stiffer spring and that raised the pressure a lot. Also I converted from an electronic oil pressure gauge to a mechanical one. I get very accurate readings now and my pressure is very solid. I also have found the engine is affected very much by oil viscosity. Having been in the oil business as a petroleum engineer with Kendall Oil for 25 years I played with different oils. I've settled on 15w40 as a good choice for the ambient temperatures here where I live.
    Most oil pressure gauges are not very accurate and the readings you get are subject to a lot of variables. An idiot light is probably just as good. Even pulling pressures directly off the engine vary depending on where you tap into an oil gallery. The best pressure gauge is often your ears! I've found these engines are subject to clattering lifters when cold if you are running too viscous an oil at cold temps. Running straight SAE 30 in a tight engine would fall into that category in my opinion.
