picts would help a bunch. But prior to 76, all windshields had hinges that, on the ws part, mounted to the bottom and inside the frame. 76 and later had hinges that mirrored each other, top half and bottom half. And all the hinge was outside the frame. And the pre 76 frames would lift off the jeep. The post 76 would have to be unbolted to come off.

IIRC, all pre 76 frames should be interchangeable. All post 76 should be interchangeable. But they are not interchangeable with each other.

    Does this help?

This pink & green 70 CJ5 (I call it my Barbie jeep) if you notice has a middle to early CJ sort of windshield with the wiper motor at the bottom. I narrowed the top of the frame by cutting approximately two inches off of each side of the top rectangular frame. First all of the spot welds were drilled off of each side and the top of the frame. Then the vertical side frames were bent in to close the gap from the removed two inches of space. Then the sheet skin was welded back on using rosette welds to replace the drilled spot welds. The skin was also shortened the same two inches. I removed the original top channel that the front edge of the fabric top slide into.

Also, notice that 79 and later door hinges have been added. This allows me to install the later style of tops. All I had to do after the major part of the welding was done was purchase the late style top along with a late style front edge retainer. I also had to make filler plates to go between the top front edge of the door and the window frame to provide a seal area. The seals for both sides were made from a flat piece of .090 aluminum.

The blue 81 CJ5 to the leftt in this picture has the later style stamped steel windshield frame. I also have an M38 A1 window frame with the windshield wipers at the top from one of my early A1's dimensionally the A1 window frame was the same as this window frame on the green Jeep. Although the later stamped steel windshield is not a direct replacement it can be used with the appropriate hinges on these earlier jeeps. but by doing it his way I get to keep the ability to remove the windshield if I want and at the same time use the later style doors without the slides and snaps in the door well which I have always hated.

Here is a closer look at my 81 with the later windshield. It really is a later windshield. Note that the windshield wiper motor is in the inside lower left corner. As apposed to the middle CJ type windshield with the motor on the outside lower left hand corner. Both as viewed from the driver’s seat. If yours has the motor on the lower left out side then you have a windshield that is from about 1970 to 1974.

    Hope this helps,

I suppose any thing is possible. Although without a lot of bogus looking fabrication I do not se how it could be made to work. Essentially the late style windshield frames are stamped steel while the earlier ones actually have a rectangular steel frame which is approximately 3/4 of an inch by 1 &1/4 inch, and the sheet metal is spot welded to it. The later style windshield frames are two pieces of stamped steel spot welded together. The hinges on the early style have arms that slide up into the rectangular section and have two bolts on the out side of the lower frame the later style have no bolts there and the hinges are bolted to the outside of the frame.

Last year for the tool box under the passenger seat was 1975. From '76 on, that area under the passenger seat was used for the seat's 'pantograph' mount, and no more toolbox.

could be that you have a 72-75 tub with 76-86 windshield frame. what rear axle do you have? the later (post 76) will have the amc 20 (round cover) most parts are swappable with only slight modification so you might never be able to pin it down.
