I've been working over my 75 CJ5. Replaced the timing chain & gears. Rebuilt carb. Replaced elect. ignition module. Set the timing.

Starts easily, idles nicely. Try to accelerate & it sputters, backfires & dies. Rechecked timing - is ok.

    Need help!

    Thanks!

Did you set the timing with the vacuum hose off the advance unit & plugged?

The guys before ask this because your symptoms smack of too much timing advance.

Question: Upon loading of the engine is sputters and backfires, will it come back to normal idle if you unload it before it dies?
Could it be that you're not plugging the vacuum advance hose to your dist when you set the timing?
Its also possible that the timing marks are off.
You might try retarting the timing a little bit more and see how it responds as a test.

I agree: What are you setting your timing at?

I'm at about 5 degrees advanced but can't adjust any further w/o killing the engine (w/ vacuum disconnected).

This morining I took the recently installed ignition module in for testing & it failed on the slow RPM test. This is the 3rd one I've put in in as many months. What would make them go bad? A bad voltage regulator?

I recall that imediately after putting in the new ignition module it ran great, then 30 min later after 15 min of engine run time the symptoms ocurred.

    Thanks for the comments/help.
