There is no factory roll (sport) bar before 1974.

Sparky is correct, but many of the '74-up factory bars have been retrofitted into earlier Jeeps.

I am confused, I thought the 462, Renegade 1 ,and Renegade 2 had roll bars. My R1 has the factory roll bar and the padding that goes around it. That would mean that roolbars were first seen in 1969 with the 462.

Sorry, I made a blanket statement and didn't mention the <1% of models out there that came with.

CJ-5s did not come with roll bars from the factory until 1974 unless they were a special package, see 462 and Renegade I and II Page I wrote for more. :D

Prior to '74, the two rollbars that were most often fitted (AFAIK) were from Kayline and from Smittybilt. I believe the Kayline bars were 'official Jeep equipment' too. I don't know if Jeep started making their own rollbars, or if they outsourced them from Kayline, but the factory bars (like the one on Steve's Jeep above) look like the Kayline bars. The Smittybilt bar has a different shape to the support bars. Rather than a straight bar mounted at an angle, the support bar is in the vertical plane with two 45 degree bends to turn and meet the hoop bar.

This is a Smittybilt bar in a CJ-6:

At that time (1975) Smittybilt was the only supplier of CJ-6 bars. The CJ-5 bar is similar, except for the obvious difference in the hoop (the CJ-6 hoop goes to the floor).
