Hey guys, nice forum you have here:)

I'm new to CJ5's but no stranger to Jeeps or building them (currently have a CJ7, sprung over, Dana44 high steer, detroits, 4.1 tcase, fuel injection etc etc). I think I found myself a "Barn Find". Picked up a 1971 CJ5 over the weekend for $350.00. This beauty had been sitting buried in a garage since 1984. Original owner parked it in the garage and forgot it was there.

Went through the drill to fire the motor, diesel down the cylinders, drain oil, replace, anyway getting to the point, the Dauntless fired first try and runs like a charm. Motors strong so I want to get her street worthy for my boys to drive to high school in a year or so. Wanna keep her stockish. I need new springs for sure, along with tires and rims. The PO put Armstrong tru trak tires on it along with 10" rims.

Which springs do you guys recommend? (I was looking at the Rancho 1" Lift springs)
Rims and Tires? The Original spare is still on the rack and is a Goodyear Suburbanite HT78-15 what size does this equate to? The rim appears to be maybe a 6" width, while the tire measures out roughly to a 28"? Any recommendations here? Keep in mind I'm looking to keep it stockish. Thinking maybe 30" or 31".

I'll take pics as we progress:) Thanks in advance for any input.

:) Welcome from Central Arizona :) Sounds like a great find, With regards to comparing tire sizes to the HT78-15 a 225/75R15 is just a hair over 28" in diameter. There are allot of great tire choices in the 235/75R15 class, They are around 29" or so depending on tread type.

I'll get some pics this afternoon. I did just take a crawl around underneath her. Wow!!! 4.88 gears and a T-18 tranny. This is getting better by the minute.

Welcome from Santa Cruz County, Cal., and thanks for confirming the orig. spare is a Goodyear Suburbanite. I've got the same tire, unused, and 43 years old. Good looking tire. Sure wish I could get four or five new ones.

Good combo! I swapped my T18 in a couple years ago, and just finished my 4.88's yesterday!
Either the Ranco 1", or a good 2.5" lift and some 31's would work well...

Sorry about not getting the pics up. I was out in the garage this evening with my youngest son working on the new project. Pulled the rear axle in preparation for the new springs. Gonna clean up the 44, new brakes, lube and paint. Also discovered along with the 4.88's I have a limited slip of some kind (track Lok maybe?). All the ID tags are still on the diff covers:) And to my astonishment the limited slip still functionsR)

To answer the question on the build tag, nope don't see one where would it be?

No but I did stop by one of my oldtimers friends shop yesterday to discuss my plans for the Jeep. He has a real nice Ramsey PTO winch on his '72. I Mentioned that would be on my list of things to do after shes roadworthy. He points and says "theres a complete set up over there, shafts, gearbox, shifters, winch, cable, hook, yours for $200.00"

Lmao, I think the galaxy is inline for me this week:)

If I remember right the factory installed trak locs on the flanged axles in 70-71. All others would have been power locks.
