The speedometer gear is in the Dana 20 and I can not get the assembly removed at all. The only socket that I have that fits it does not really grasp it well and I'm afraid of rounding the corners. Has anyone run across a good method to get this done?

I ground the end of my 7/8 socket down until it fit in the housing far enough to work. I'd loan ot to you, but I'm trying to get mine back together this week to go to Katemcy.

I agree. Some you can get with a standard thin wall 6 point or 12 point socket. I had to grind the end of a socket to "catch" the speedo housing as most sockets are rounded slightly on the end to allow them to slide onto fasteners easier but this keeps them from getting a good grip on the housing. about 30 seconds with a sander/grinder worked for me. I bought a cheap socket for this so I didn't ruin a good quality unit and it's held up to about 30 transfer cases so far and still works fine. YMMV.

Nice! I see a trip to Harbor Freight in my future. I'm sure not gonna grind down my Craftsman sockets!
