My 73 CJ5 w/258 6cyl is making a whistling sound during acceleration. I thought is might be a vacumm leak, but I have not found any yet. The Jeep runs fine other than the noise. Has anyone else had a similar problem before? Any ideas on the possible source?

sounds like a vac leak .have the motor idle and spray carb cleaner or wd40 around the base plate and carb itself. does that engine have alot of hoses ?

maybe not specifically a "vaccum leak" as much as it might be somewhere up-stream of the carb on the air intake..

Actually it does seem to be happy! Although I would like to find the source of the whistle. It does not have a lot of vaccum hoses. It has basic early emission systems, fuel evap recovery, TCS ... I do have a couple of disconnected fuel evap revocey lines the need to find a home for. But they do not seem to be the source of my problem as best I can tell.

I am going to try the other ideas suggested this week end. I let you know how I make out.

    Thanks

I finally had some time to play around with this problem today. Here is what I have observed. \

    * Under acceleration (load) the whistle noise is very noticeable.
*The whistle is barely audible with now load. I can just hear the noise under the hood when I move off idle, but I can't tell where it is coming from.
    * Vacuum lines have been checked and replaced with no change in the noise.
    * If I remove the air cleaner assembly the noise is there but barely audible.

I don't think the air cleaner is the problem, because the noise is still there. But it appears to have a significant effect on the noise. Does anyone have any other thoughts? At this point I am questioning the carb, base plate gaskets or phenolic heat insulator (Cracked?)

I had the same problem with my CJ-5 with 258. Turns ot the intake manifold bolts were loose. Retorquing the bolts cured the problem

That sounds interesting. I checked the intake bolts and found that 35 years made the bolts unwilling to move. Since the Jeep runs fine other than the whistle I am going to keep that for a winter project to R&R the intake/exhaust and replace the gaskets. Thanks for the idea.
