I finally have my 66 '6A in driveable condition! I was trying to be ready for a ride over the labor day weekend, and it kind of worked...

I put it in the shop with a proffessional/friend to do the brake lines, hoses, and rear cylinders after I did the disc with dual reservoir swap. He also had to do an alignment and solder the fuel tank. I had given up and was headed out Sat. morning when he called and said it was done. I still had no brakelights or seatbelts. I drove it to the camp area where the ride was starting, fixed lights and bolted in the rear seat, but it was running so rough, I skipped the long ride with 18 jeeps. We did take a shorter ride on Sat evening with four other early CJs.

I need to get the carb rebuilt and put in seatbelts, install the top, etc. But it is great to actually drive the thing!! It idles great and runs great but stumbles on accelleration. I think the clutch has improved with some wear, and the carb has improved, but it can buck if trying to accell gently. My son (4) is calling it "Rodeo" because it bucks!!

I am in need of some lower gearing, with 3.73s and 31s, is too fast in 1st gear, high range. The trans is a T-86. I have a T-14 that has about a 10% lower first gear in the shed that I think I will pursue installing, maybe rebuild it and the t/c that its bolted to and replace both. Does anyone know if I can take out the interlock pill from a single stick dana 18 and get a 2wd-low position? I also have access to a T-18 ford with a 250% lower first gear, but it would take a $500 adapter to mate with the t/c, not to mention the T-18 definitely needs rebuilt. Always something to do.

Fun fun fun I need to get some updated pics, maybe this weekend, I am traveling now so time limits me. Thanks to all for all the info for the last 2 years!!!

The t14 won't make any diff in the gearing really, we did it on or 67 with 3:73's. and it didn't help. I picked up some 4:27 gears which should help with the high gearing, but if I where you I'd put that ford t18:) Really makes a big diff. My 67 will probably be getting a sm420 as well since I have an extra one already sitting in the garage adapted up to a dana 18 already:)

    I'll get pics this weekend.

    I'm surprised the T-14 didn't help, Novak lists the gearing as: 3.10, 2.61, 1.0, Rev. 3.10
    Compared to the T-86's :2.78, 1.681, R 3.79

That 10% should equate to changing from 3.73s to about 4.11 diff gears

I'll sure take it under advisement though, but that $500 adapter is definitely a speed bump and with this project being more cruiser than crawler, the close 1-2 ratios on the t-14 should be good, and I don't have the extreme slow reverse. Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself. Also with the added length of the T-18 with adapter, would I need new driveshafts?

With all the rain coming, I may get my seatbelts in, top on, and carburetor off for rebuild this weekend!

    Congrat's!
Guess they're never really "done," but it sure is great to get one back on the trail!

You don't need the $500 adapter for the T18, I just used a Jeep T18 (Scout 18/19 works also) factory adapter for the dana 20 and output shaft. You will just have to drill and tap the 6 bolt holes in the back of the ford trans. rebuild kit plus adapter = less than $300 out of pocket
