Trying to figure out what's not stock. Any ideas? Here's some pics of the Transfer case, power steering, springs, steering column, etc... What do you think?

There is nothing about your steering that is stock. The column, the steering box or the tierod setup, all of it is a butchered mess. Your steering box was originally attached to the bottom of your steering column and was mounted back on the frame rail beside the engine.

Oh man. I think the term you often see in a lot of "for sale" ads would be appropriate here.

    "Too much to list".

I only looked at one pic, and I see el cheapo seats, butchered dash, and a butchered floor. If you're looking for something even remotely stock, keep looking. If you're looking for a "project" you've found one!

Definately a project. I picked this up for $500 to tinker with. Never had a jeep before and thought this would be perfect to learn from. I'm just trying to figure out what's been done to it. I'm not going to do much to it just want to make it safe and functional. Is that the saginaw steering box that I've been reading about on here? Everything pretty much works except I'm trying to figure out how to hook up some kind of parking brake. The cable was cut and leads to nowhere. Any bit of knowledge would be appreciated...

The S on the top of the steering box stands for Saginaw, a division of GM. The Saginaw steering is an excellent upgrade when done right. The first thing that caught my eye was the welded tie rod - illegal in some (many? all?) states and something you should remedy. There is a sticky thread in the fabrication forum about the Saginaw conversion, and a photo album (in the photo albums) of just Saginaw conversion pictures.

The bellcrank bracket on the front crossmember is part of the factory steering. The bracket is obviated by the Saginaw conversion. Most conversions use a 1-piece tie rod from knnucle to knuckle, and a single connecting rod to the right knuckle or right end of the tie rod. You want to get rid of the two-piece setup - it is problematic. Hopefully the present geometry is ok and you will not have to reposition the steering gear.

I'd suggest you focus on brakes and steering first, before you drive it much more than around the yard.

almost looks like a Commando column and wheel to me.

you're missing the entire parking brake/drum assy that mounts to the rear of the transfer case.
classifieds here, ebay, or Herm might have the whole assy.

    x2.

I thought the '71 CJ6 used a D20. I could be wrong, maybe just the commando.

Check out the bell crank still attached to the crossmember, it's arms chopped off. And can't see the whole story with the angle iron running across the top of the steering box, but I'm betting it doesn't get any prettier when you zoom back.

There are times when you just break out the cutoff wheel and start over...

You should submit those pics here, some good reading (vulgarity warning): http://128.83.80.193/scarysteering/index.html

No CJ got the D20 until 1972. The Jeepster Commando used the D20, I believe for the entire run with all drivetrains.

Looks like Renegade Plum to me ... maybe this is a Ren II? Look at the Renegade page http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/general/Renegade/index.php - pretty sure the Plum color was not offered in '71 except on the Ren.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Regarding the park brake, it would bolt to the back of the transfer case. As stated, your assembly is missing. Good news is you have the right output housing and drive flanges so all you'd have to do get a complete assembly and bolt it on and get and hook up a new cable. I'd recommend replacing the rear output seal also before installation so you don't get oil all over the new shoes.
As was already said, get the steering and brakes in order before worrying about anything else.

I have never seen somebody bolt a crossmember to the top of the steering gear box. That is scaring me :(

Good eyes, Tim! Didn't even notice that at first (I was distracted by thoughts of someone actually building this and then deciding it was perfectly safe, perfectly normal to drive).

For some reason I thought this was a 6 at first. Disregard my previous D20 thoughts, and then disregard again for only being in the Commando, not 6.

Definitely submit those pics to the Scary Steering Page! It's a toss up between the angle iron and the tie rod, hmmm, I think I'll go with tie rod end at the pitman arm for being my favorite piece on this fine build.

I too have never seen that - the steering box is supposed to be anchored by the cast brackets on the side, not by the cover bolts. I wonder if the casting there is strong enough to be used that way.

A very scary set up!:shock: If it were mine I would strip the whole enchilada and start over. I am glad to see that you had picked up a project from a P.O. Maybe you can "right" the wrongs and make it a great rig!

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

I'm sure the P/S gear is bolted thru the side as well.
this looks like a power steering gear.
    is that correct ?

Yep, it looks like he boxed the rail and added a thick box-like support bracket on the side in addition to the cross member support bracket. I took some more pics for your enjoyment. I also checked out that posted renegade info. Looks like the Renegade I to me. If so, is this something that I would want to restore in the future?

Maybe ... I don't know what the production numbers were, but I'd guess a few thousand total, with fewer Ren 1s than Ren 2s. They aren't super rare (quite a few extant today), but they are cool. Nobody is going to shoot you if you want to wheel it, or if you want to upgrade some of the systems like the steering or brakes.

A Ren 1 will have a tailgate - does yours have a tailgate? June '70 could be '70 or '71 production - that's pretty late in the year for '70. If it's a Ren 1, I'd certainly put it back to the purple paint with the white stripes - that's really different.

Yes, it does have the tailgate. I'm thinking it's a '71 Renegade I.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

since it isn't original paint, dash, etc etc etc
it's value has already been severely diminshed
I suppose if you wanted to restore it and have a purple Jeep...
