I was used the search function and couldn't find my answer so here it goes.
Has anyone done or does anyone one have more detailed info than Novaks on swapping in a ford 302 into a 1965 CJ5? Advanced Adapters makes a kit to adapt my T-90 to a V-8 bell housing but would the drivetrain be able to handle 215 HP.
    Thanks Eric

I think your foot should be able to answer that question. I would be more concerned with a tapered axleshafts in the Dana 44 than I would be with the transmission. If you're easy on it though you'll probably be fine. Take some time and explore your options carefully. You may find a T-18 with a more desirable low gear ration to be a better option. The adapter then needs to go between the transmission and the transfer case.

With judicious use of your right foot it would survive.

Past experience with the 289, 283, 302 etc showed issues with the 2,3 synchros and the front axle's spider and axle gears more than the tapered shafts. These were issues mostly when you would need to 'get on it' as they showed up for us mostly in the snow with chains. We believed that it had as much to do with the additional weight of the V8 over the front that caused it to get more 'grip'. Then in the 80s we went V6 and never looked back.

FWIW - I have a t90 to Ford V8 adaptor out in the shop.

My dads 46 2A has a Ford 260 V8 in it and yes it works great. But you better resist the temptation to see what she has in her or cut off a few toes to lighten up the foot.

Also something that has not been mentioned, the 302 has long legs, likes being at a higher RPM than most Jeepin' is done at.
Would be great for a DD street Jeep, with occasional trail use.

Back in the olden days, I recall a teenager having a Willys overland wagon with a 289, heavy teenage toes meant the T90 input shaft looked like a corn cob. Swapped in a 4 spd ten bolt top loader using an AA kit ($490 in '77) bolted it up to the D18 and whoa- second gear scratches were a lot of fun, then the tapered axles in the D44 went south, so in went a 9" rear end sporting 4.88s to match the D25 gears. So the moral of this story is Just Empty Every Pocket.

i am well on the way to having this mod in my shorty CJ5. Will be running a 302w to T18a to Dana 20 to Dana 44 rear end with a detroit locker. I have been told that with a 4.27 diff it should be alot of fun. It will mainly be street driven with the occasional off road use. Not realy rock crawling but. Do that in the XJ..

As time goes on and it gets closer to being installed i will let you all know how its going.
