    Hey,
I just converted my old moterola alternator to a SI 10 delco but my jeep has a short and I`ve been looking for it. My question for you guys is if its normal that the #2 wire to short just a little to the ground and a little less to the battery wire. Note, this is with the alternator disconnected. I would apperciate the help.

Alright, So I've got my multimeter out testing stuff to see if its electirically connected. I'm disconnecting stuff to see whats shorting my battery. When I got to the alternator the short on my battery stopped. So testing the alternator theres a electrical connection (although weak) between the number 2 termanal post and the ground as well a even weaker connection between the #2 post and the positive battery post.

I guess I'll explan the background of whats going on. I'm compleatly rewiring the jeep using a new fuse block (which isnt hooked up yet) I'm on the basic engine wiring (alternator, starter, battery, ignition switch) and when I turn the car on the battery voltage drops and keeps dropping. So I'm looking for a short in the system. keep in mind that only the ignition switch, the starter, the battery, the alternator, coil, ballast resistor, spark plugs are hooked up.

Another piece to my problem, I just went out to see if the voltage would drop with the alternator disconnected. So what happens is I turn the key to the on position and the voltage on the battery slowly starts to drop, about .1 of a volt every 4 or 5 seconds.

when I crank the car up, the volts start to plummit really quickly until the moter dies.(with the alternator connected)

Another question, is the coil supposed to be drawing juice when the car isnt cranked but the key is on, because mine is, and lots of it.

If the points happen to be in the closed position where engine stopped, the coil will draw current as will ballast resistor (get hot - heating up). This is normal. Click starter or manually rotate engine until points open and the check for draw again. Note a very low battery will drop off voltage quite quickly. check specific gravity of battery to determine state of charge.

The battery is weak, which isnt much of a suprise to me when theres a rouge drain on it all the time and my old alternator wasnt charging. seems to charge fine though with a plug in charger.
I rotated the engine a bit and it did the same thing. I disconnected the coil to distributor top wire and still did it, then I disconnected the little wire on the negative side of the coil. and the draw stopped. I touched the wire straight to the little wire going to the distributor and the voltage on the battery dropped to about 9.5. (does that have something to do with the ballast resistor?) what does the little wire going into the distributor do anyways?
I guess its possible it rotated to touch the point again. I'll go check

EDIT: Took alot of the wiring off and reconnected it and it all started working fine. Jeeps do some wierd stuff... but I guess that could be applied to car wiring in general
