I hope timgr is on the site tonight...

Okay, I've got a '74 CJ5. It took a few trips to flaps before I figured out that I didn't have the 232 that was originally installed. When I go to the parts store I tell them it is out of an 80 or 81 and what I bring home works. I'd like to nail it down though.

    Some stamping:

On the Passenger Side underneath the plugs:

    008C06

    On the Driver Side:

    Exhaust Manifold

    Jul 80

    EF3237858

    Firing Order 153624

    Lower Block - 8235444

    Any ideas?

I would expect that by August the factory would be tooling up for the next model year, or even be in production. Maybe early August is still 1980...

Which valve cover do you have, the stamped steel one? 1981 was the first year for the plastic valve cover. 1981 also saw a lighter weight block and some other changes, but I don't know how to ID the newer style block externally. If it's a mass-market rebuilt engine (like Jasper and such) it could be put together from several engines, so pinning it down to 1980 or 1981 by engine features could be difficult.

Plastic Valve cover. I think I'm just going to call it an 81, if it is stamped with the date code on the engine, wouldn't that make it original?

Next it's time to crawl underneath to determine which tranny I have. Would it have changed from 74 to 81? It's a 3-speed. Reverse at the top left.

    I appreciate the help.

No, no 3-speed was offered in 1980 or 1981.

    You're welcome.

The date code is right, regardless of what year model it is. If it has a plastic valve cover, I'd assume it's an '81. The '81 engine also used an aluminum intake manifold and a 2V carb. Those things are easily changed though, and fitment is backwards compatible.

You probably have a B-W T-14, but you can ID the trans by the markings on the case. www.jeeptech.com lists the markings - look at factory transmissions T-14, T-15 and T-150 (the most likely numbers).
