    My '75 has an I-6, but I don't know which one. How can I tell? Also, is there a S/N on the engine to match the body?

    The type and build date code is located on the block, below and between the #2 and #3 spark plugs. Post it and we can decode it.

    There's no S/N on the block, just the above build date. The date should roughly match the build date of the vehicle, from the sticker on the dash.

    It says 711E05

    What sticker on the dash? All I have is a S/N plate on the firewall.

    I'll have to double check, but

    7 = 1974
    11 = November
    E = 232 cid 1V
    05 = 5th day

    There was a yellow and black sticker on the dash, on drivers side next to the door. They get removed or painted over.

    Does the S/N plate tell me anything about the build date?

    Not directly. Engine date is better. You can guess at the Jeep's build date if you can find another Jeep with a close sequential serial number and an intact dash sticker.

    The engine was probably built only a few days earlier than the Jeep. Your dash sticker probably said November 1974.

    Thanks for the info. One more question, the remaining paint on the engine block is a light blue color, was this the factory paint?

    I hope you don't mind my asking. Can you ID an engine from the valve cover tag? That is if it still has the original valve covers.

    Looks like it's the same sort of code - not sure what the "P" stands for. Same sort of date code though ... either April 2, 1971 or April 2, 1980. A 304 should be "H", 360 2V "N", and a 401 the famous "Z" code IIRC. "P" may be 360 4V.
    <edit> Yep, "P" is a 360 with a 4V carb.

    It's easier/better to just look at the numbers cast into the block, since valve covers can be switched around so easily.
