Since my last wheeling trip my 1961 CJ5 started making a clacking noise that got louder as the day progressed. At the begining of the day it was very faint almost like the sound lifters make but a few hours later it was way louder and decided to cut the ride short.
Here is a video of it making the sound.

I took the valve cover off when I got home and did not see anything abnormal.

Any apparent loss of power? and does the sound smooth out at all at higher revs?

towards the end it did loose power but during the time of the video it did smooth out at high revs and if I revd it up in neutral no clacking or very faint but later when I decide to call it quits it was so loud and would not smooth out at all.

bent push rod or rocker arm ?
grab a hold and move them around
I don't think I would drive it till you locate the problem, but it's your choice.

That does not sound good at all.

When you popped the valve cover(s) off, was there any apparent oil flow?:?

Actually I did notice no oil flow when I ran the engine without the valve cover for about 1 min but everything was well coated with oil. I don't know how noticeable should the flow be at the valve cover but I looked and did not see anything new, so I wonder if pump is bad or oil passage clogged somewhere.

Jim, if it was a rod or rocker arm do you think it would have smoothed out at higher revs when the prob first started? This kind of sounds like the problem I had at Glamis.

If the rods and rocker arms are okay I'd run a compression test to check for a bad head gasket. If 2 contiguos cylinders are dead I'd pull the head.

To me because of the "double" knock, sounds like a rod. :?

I hope it is just a head gasket. Just did that on my 65. Piece of cake!! Makes me sick for you just thinking of having to do a bearing job. How is the oil pressure? If it has low oil pressure a bearing could have spun.

the push rods are very stout, but still possible to have one tweaked. I've seen bent intake rocker arms..
if no oil, check the metal line at the rear of the head, drivers side.
godd diagnostics will save you some $$
    real hard to e-diagnose

First thing I will be doing today is check compression to see if any bad cylinder. The clacking looks like is comming from the rear cylinder.

yes i would do the simple stuff 1st. If compression is good then have a look under the valve cover. If that all looks good, let it idle without the cover off. It wont hurt anything..just makes a little mess. You know, do the easy free stuff.:)
