my jeep always stumbled a bit when you first start it, but then ran great when it warmed up. I figured the automatic choke needed adjusting, but instead i swapped in a manual choke. I guess I don't know as much about this as I thought. now my jeep runs great at start up and warm up with the choke all the way open. In other words i don't have to move the choke at all, i just leave it open, start the jeep and drive. Its my understanding that the choke should be partially closed for startup and fully open on warm up. is this correct? if so, how come i don't have to move my manual choke at all? is it because the last few days have been 100+ degrees? does this make it burn rich/waste gas or anything? thanks in advance:)

oh, its a 258 with stock carter yf

I agree with Boyink. Cold air is more dense than warm air so when the engine is cold and ambient air temp is cool or cold, you have to add more fuel or reduce the volume of air to compensate. That's the choke's function. When hot out you don't need any more fuel to make it start/run. Nickmil

My Jeep has always had a manual choke and I only use it if the temp is around freezing or if for some reason it doesn't start on the first crank or two. When it's warm you don't need the choke.

I noticed the same thing with the carter on my 232. when i switched to a manuel choke I almost never need to use it unless I was out in snow.
