    M38 L-134 Flathead.

Does anyone have any secrets to replacing the upper part of the two piece rear main crankshaft seall?

Tried several times and keep giving up.

    Thanks all for your input.

I have replaced the rear main seal in a couple of F-heads. If you are talking about the neoprene seal rather than the rope seal, I take off the rear main bearing cap, remove the old seal, temporarily put the top part of the seal in the bearing cap, and leave it overnight. The next day I take it out of the cap and it slips into the top fairly easily.

Not specific to the L-head, but other manuals tell you to loosen the main bearing caps. Of course, you need a torque wrench to tighten them, but that should make it easier to slide the new seal in.

If you loosen the other bearing caps, you probably will want to take the timing gear/chain
cover off first so that the crank shaft dropping down doesn't damage the front seal.
