haaa - if it turns out that way - then it'll just be part of the jeep experiance. I hope not.
not having any luck finding a timing light. NAPA dosen't even deal with um. calling around as I type.

just for kicks, since the engine was ideling BUT rockin hard, I dropped in my distributor from my other engine that was running great.

Idel improved vastly, but I an at the outside limit of both adjustments with the distributor tured counter clock wise. Looks like I will have to drop the oil pump and kick it over a tooth or 2 so the #1 is in teh middle of the adjustment. as it is right now, it idels great - engine is smooth and sits still (no more buckin) BUT...

Always with the but.. a new symptom.... back firin out the carb - gotta move the oil pump so I can adjust the #1 of the distributor more counter clock wise, I am shooting to have it fire with #1 in the center of the adjustment.

as it is right now, I have full adjustment of both distributor grooves turning clockwise, but nothing to the left - if I jump the wires one tower clockwise, and turn the adjuster clock wise fully, the #1 tower is just not where it needs to be to fire and it will not, to solve that I will move the oil pump a tooth or 2.

Advance auto has a timing light for 40 bucks - see ya soon

jumped the oil pump forward a couple teeth, while it did relocate the rotor as expected, I still have the same problem with being at the outside limit of both adjustments. time to think on it

    Retarded.

You may have to make the wire(to the coil) longer (you dont who cut what off) to get to 5*. BTDT

Ya know, that just might do it - never thought of it. It wasn't upside down on the first engine, which was running great, but if I flipped the plate - it might give me the adjustment I need.

But then again, I have missed something simple in my opinion, a fresh start should do wonders. The engine was running rough before, but could rev and was smokie. Now i can get a sweet idel ( amazingly smooth - indescribably nice, not even a valve train noise), but there is backfiring through the carb and lotsa smoke, almost no rev, just pop pop pop. From what I can tell with the timing light, there are 2 notches on a tab near the crank pully for gauging the timing. to make it easier to see, i rubed white chalk into the pully groove. I have adjusted the timing so it is dead on either one, but get backfiring, smoke and no real ability to rev.

Tomorrow is another day. I think I will start by checking the valves again as a compression test showed me that #1 & 3 were around 110 psi while #2&4 were around 145psi. i might have an adjustment issue with the valves, I definatly needed to take a step back for now.

Hey - the proect started as something to do - I can't complain - I have something to do R)

I'll get it - keeps me busy tinkering - all is well:beer:

    Repeat after me........

    DISTRIBUTOR ROTATION IS COUNTER CLOCKWISE....
    DISTRIBUTOR ROTATION IS COUNTER CLOCKWISE....
    DISTRIBUTOR ROTATION IS COUNTER CLOCKWISE....

Glad I walked away last night....

knew it was something simple, cant believe it even fired never mind idel

purrs now - but still very smokie. I am hoping beyond hope it is the residue from the first engine

Glad you got it up and running, I hope the smoke is leftover residue and some valve lash adjustment will give you a summers worth of wheeling.
Is this the rig you posted the question about the spin on vs canister oil filter?

yes - same rig - and she is running great , especially if I keep gas in her - don't ask hahahahaha

there is a tiny bit of hesitation - the exhaust system has now cleared the majority of the oil in there so it is running clear at the exhast, puff a smoke here n there, but better. The first engine was full of oil in the cylinders, so I suspect some of it got blown into the exhaust system

glad to have here back up n runnin, gotta get the charging system checked out -= I don't think it is fully charging, but the volt meter is not dropping all that fast either so it is putting out something - slow to turn over, the longer I drive.

readjusted the valves at lunch time - must be the rocker rail as it is quieter but just not there yet, plenty of oil to the top end as evident with firing her up to listen to the rockers with the valve cover off - opps, spots a oil everywhere
