hello i have a 1975 cj 5 it has a 4 inch spring lift, and a 1/2 or 1 inch shackles drop. The thing sways all over the road. i read in another post that someone had the similer problem but no one said what the solution was to stop the swaying. all the steering componts are new expect for the steering box. just looking for ideas on what i should do next.

another question that i have is if i should do a transfer case drop, and any other suggestions

    thank you

What do your spring shackle bushings look like? I'd start there and shocks.

they don't look that bad but when i bought the jeep with the lift and shakles on it so i duno what the guy did, but they where loose. So i tighted them back up, which did help. I do have a bent shakle mount in there rear. so thats probaly not helping. I just really wondering if i fix everything. will i still have swaying or just can the shakle drop and do a body lift

Drop the lift shackles on the front if you can find stock size ones. Even the little bit of extra leverage from the lentgh can cause issues.

Make sure there is no play in your steering system. Have someone sit in the drivers seat and turn the wheel back and forth. Check all components for play. I have play in the ujoint coupling the steering column to the intermediate shaft. I am about to do a YJ column conversion so I have just been living with it.

it may, but you'd probably be happier if you did the same in the rear.....(made a differance when I did it on my 6 the first time I built it)

put a sway bar on it. i have a 74 cj5 4" lift it had body roll and didnt feel good going down the road. put a 76 or new sway bar on it with quick disconects on her and a world of differance one of the best mods. yet

well i think i decide to take the shackle drop off of it, and just go with a 1 inch body lift since i need new body, body mounts pretty much everying. just wondering if the is alot in of modification in doing a body lift. never did one before.

on a side note. its a good thing i found this site :D

well i got my new shakles in today. I bought the 1/2's lift ones because i didn't know what ones where on the jeep. Well come to find out that they are already the 1/2's ones. does anyone have any idea what can be causing this swaying problems.

Have you had an alignment lately? I would have the caster checked. Lifts sometimes cause problems with the caster. When they align it they will give you a print out. It should have the caster spec in it. I think it is supposed to be +5* or 6*. If it is off then you have to have the
axle rotated and the perches rewelded. (the best way) or degree shims under the spring pack. If you do the wedges make sure they are the steel ones.

have you driven other CJ's? most are naturally squirly. Add in a lift and big tires, it doesnt get better

  20. Take off those extended shackles in the front, install a shackle reversal kit in its place and your problem will be solved. I experianced the same symptons with my CJ , after the reversal, 70mph on straight stretches of road are possible.
Do some research ,it may or may not be right for you, But it is the single best Mod. I have ever done. Good luck.
