What keeps the brake pedal rod connected to a Master Cylinder

I am working on installing a dual res. Willwood master cylinder into my flatfender. I have the MC adapter plate that mounts to the frame and was wondering what keeps the rod connected to the brake pedal from falling out of the master cylinder? It's got to be more than just a rubber cover.... I may ditch the willwood if I can't get it to fit properly. I may just go with a more traditional MC, but again, what keeps the rod in?

 

Just a rubber cover it is, I never saw any clip to install on my SMC and on the DMC I just got it's set up the same way

 

By 'adjustment', do you mean how far the brake pedal can come back? Just relying on that seems kind of scary....

 

Some master cylinders have a cup like spring type washer that is in the end of the master cylinder. The rod has a grove close to the end, that slides in the washer and keeps the rod from coming out of the cylinder. The washer is held in the master cylinder by the internal ring in the end of the cylinder.

 

Nothing needs to keep it in. If it is set up right it can't come out. You may need a longer push rod.

 

There is a spring also that holds the pedal linkage all the way into the MC. This is a long spring that goes from the pedal linkage to a frame component. If you need more on this I'll post a pic.

I'm assuming in this that you don't have the body on the frame. Once the body is on and the rod adjusted correctly, the master cylinder rod cannot come out. The arm runs along the bottom of the body at about a 45 degree angle and does not have enough clearance with the body to allow the rod to pull backward and out of the MC. Although some MC arranagements have retaining clips of some kind, most do not on many automobiles and trucks. Willys is no different.
