I have just installed a new Solex on my 58 cj5 f-134 it seems to run o.k. having some issues with cold starts does not seem like the choke works all that great. I pull the choke cable all the way out and can watch the choke lever close all the way but still I have to fiddle around a bit to get it started. Also I can not figure out how to attach the manual throttle cable in conjuction with the other linkage. Any ideas would help. Thanks

    Re: New Solex Card

I replaced my carb with aSOLEX and had a slight improvement. Recently replaced the points with the PERTRONIX elecronic ignition and it made a HUGE difference. Make sure you have a HOT spark before adjusting the SOLEX.

Make sure your engine is fully warmed up before you adjust carb. The choke on the Solex is just an extra fuel delivery circuit, adds fuel in high up in the throat. If possible, get a helper and check to see if it's working properly while starting. Solexes do have a tendency to "lose their prime" or, allow fuel to drain back and cause "hard" starting if they sit for a length of time. Takes a few more turns of the starter to get fuel up from the pump to the carb it seems.

My solex was cold blooded and would run too lean so I ordered a carb kit for a pacco carb and used some of those jets, while drilling others to get it richer. It now starts with minimal to no choke when cold and performance is increased lots over the stock calibration. I do have a header, dual exhaust and paper air filter as well. I now like my carb. Starts and runs great.Sounds like yours needs to be jetted as well.

I believe they are jetted generically and have to be fine tuned for each engine. Mine had modifications so more adjustments were needed. A stock engine will probably need less jetting adjustments. My plugs are a nice light tan now instead of snow white. Starts and runs great.
