Hello everyone, I,m going to relocate my gas tank from under the drivers seat, in my 56 CJ5 to the rear of the frame. Has anyone already done this? What kind of gas tank works best? Thanks for your help.

Get a '70-'75 rear tank and skid. You can buy them new through Quadratec or the like. Have to cut the rear frame bracing out, no biggie. Put in a marine selector valve between the seats and you can run dual tanks, 25 gal of usable fuel without a can!

i used a 1979 tank/fill neck/skid plate. very common swap, it is possibile to use the high cap 20gal tank (and the related stuff), but the stock 15gal is an improvement over the underseat tank.

use the search feature to find out more details.

Having just completed mine, I would not get the 70-75 tank as it comes with the 2 1/4" filler and it is difficult to find a filler neck. Makes it more difficult as the filler pipe extends over the frame rail also. I would go with the 76 and up tank which filler neck and hoses are easily available. Did mine on a 52 M38 and had to move the x member 2 1/2". Don't know if you will have the same problem?

X2. Everything is available aftermarket for the '76-'83. Not so for the earlier one.:v6:

I think my tank is off a '78 model although I didn't do the work. It doesn't have any clearance issues.
