Most people who build their own, pretty much just build it the way they want it to be.

If you mean a real 'roll bar' that sits on the rear fender wells, about the only dimension you'll need is the height above the fender wells. The bar is as wide as will just fit between the body rails - typically you have to spring them to get them to go between the body rails - either by setting one side and springing the other side in by pushing hard and suddenly, or with a makeshift turnbuckle or such. As I recall, the assembly scoots forward as far as it will go, against the bow pockets.

I'd suggest you look around for a used commercial roll bar. They aren't scarce. You'll save a lot of time over building one, and it'll probably be cheaper.

    What's your location?

If it is for street use, I agree, just go ahead and find a used one. But if you off-road much, build a better one, preferrably a cage tied into the frame.

Try advertising in the WTB (want to buy) section here and on Willystech. If you have a local 4x4 or Jeep forum, advertise there too. In New England, we have www.neow.org - just as an example of what kind of forum to look for. Folks in your area will give you good leads on local sources.

    hth!
