I'm using a napa relay. It is supposedly used for electric golf carts. Let me see if I can find the number.

    Kevo

    Found it Napa part#ST85

I've just got the cheapy 30 A Bosch relay, been fine since last June, but my electric fan is just one out of a Dodge V6 car, nothing special.

    Not nessasarly recomending them but,
Pirate4x4 has lengthy disscusions on this subject.
And I remember relays were a sore point.

They are all over the place. I got one for mine. Screws right into my block and/or intake manifold.

    Here's one on eBay:

    Here's some at JEGS:

    http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/758607/10002/-1

DO a little more research online and you can fine them EVERYWHERE.

I have the electric fan set up in mine and I just use the screwed in the plug to my intake manifold (water-cooled) and ran the wire to my fan. I believe I have the 190 degree one. I don't use the "relay", just screwed the plug into core. Of course the "plug" is between the battery and the fan...Making the plug turn the fan on when it reaches temperature.

    Good luck!

This switches the ground right? Makes a ground circuit powering the relay?

Both those kits have relays in them though, I would rather have a switch and turn the fan on/off myself, rather than having the fan cut on and off over and over.

any other suggestions for a coolant fan switch? I looked up the '82 Chevy Cavalier that Scott mentioned in the NAPA website, and like Hawkes said, it switches on at 224-236 de and off at 212 deg.

anyone know a stock application that switches on and off around the 195 degree range?

Will a Honda Accord fan switch work or any other ones from an import? I'm browsing the napa site and found this

It says that it turns on at 198 deg. but doesn't say when it turns off. also, the threads are metric.

Don't buy no cheap temp switch or relay. Just what I need, get out on the trail and have my fan die.......

Go to MSCDIRECT.COM and do a seach on Maxon switch part #56499247. They're on page 4484 of their catalog. Fits perfectly into the 1/2" port in the back of a F-head. That's the one I have, it's 190F but you can get them in other temps if you like. They're $71 but very reliable items.

What's wrong with the temperature? You don't want the electric fans running all the time. If you have a 195 thremostate and your fan starts at 195. You won't get the motor up to full operating temp. You only need to worry if a motor gets around 260 degrees. IIRC.

I was worried the motor will be running too much over the normal operating temp.

Spal has a controller FAN-PWM that I just installed. Jeep is down now due to other upgrades (power steering) so I can not give opinion of function as yet. Controller wires directly to battery and fan. You can set the temp range in which it operates. Fan spins at 50% speed until lower setting is reached, then speed icreases to 100% at 25 degrees above lower setting. I had the other set up dicussed above. Sensor lying in between radiator fins. Darn thing kicked on and off constantly. It made my volt gauge give weird readings and fried at least two internally regulated alternators because of Amp draw. Unit can also control a second fan. Kit requires a SPAL or Oem variable volt temp sensor to be in the cooling system somewhere. www.spalusa.com I think I paid approx 90$ for it at a Goodguys car show

I have the Spal controller, I like the way it works. User set temp control with two fans possible. You can use a switch to disable it for stream crossings. I mounted it under the hood it is a sealed unit. I just need to add my 2nd fan.

    scott,

the single wire coming from the temperature switch gets wired to directly to 86 of the relay? the wiring diagram i have for an electric fan set up is confusing because it's showing a 12V source going into the switch and then from the switch to 86 of the relay. does it need 12v or will i only need a 12v going into the switch if the switch has an adjustable temp unit wired with it?

I'm not sure about the adjustible switch. I just have the singe wire preset temperature switch. :(

It's been a while sence I did the wiring. As I recall. The temperature switch is the ground wire that activates the relay. Once the temperature gets up to the switching point then it grounds itself. Then the relay switches on the electric fan on.

cool, good thing you're online, i was looking for a quick response. this switch is the last thing i have to do to my wiring, minus the battery, before firing up the motor. i just bought one of those cavalier temperature switches and will try and see how it works. i'm also not wiring an adjustable switch just the straight switch...

i will wire the switch on the relay's ground then. and then 12v on the other side (aka 86)...

do you have yours set up so that the fan will still work after the key is in off?

No. I didn't like how it was still running when I was covering the Jeep back up at the end of the day. But I can do it just by pluging in the power wire to a different spot in the fuse box.
