Does anybody know when Trac-Lok's were first offered in CJ rear ends? Were they in older Dana 44's and also in AMC 20's? Thanks in advance.

How do you like it? Does it have street manners?
I have a chance to buy a d44 with one in it, and replace my AMC 20(with 1 piece Mosers). I don't go off road much, so I'm wondering if it's worth it.

When new, the Trac-Lock works pretty well. I have broken one - apparently that's fairly common. The spider gears break. When they are new, the traction is good, and they have excellent street manners. They also tend to wear out comparatively quickly. I'd expect any used axle with a Trac-Loc to be worn out. The D44s with a Track-Lock also have the spring pads in the wrong place to directly replace a Corporate 20 in a CJ. The factory gear ratios are different from the centered D44 (3.73, 4.27 opt) and the M20 (3,54, 4.10 opt), so it's unlikely you'll find one that can be used without a gear change.

So, if you can handle changing the gear ratio and grinding off/rewelding the spring pads, the D44 will work. You should also expect to renew the Trac-Lock clutches. Piece of cake ;)

my 1970 came with one and 3.73. when I went to regear it about half of the clutch pack was bad. But I had to buy a new carrier to go up to 4.10.

Thanks for all the info! I can buy a matching set of narrow track axles from a 70-something CJ. D30 front/d44 rear with 3.73's. I have 3.54's now. I run 33" tires, hardly any off roading ( it's actually illegal here, unless you are on private property). The extra traction would be nice, but is really not that important to me.
I think that 3.73 are a more economical gear ratio for me, but is it really worth it? I recently rebuilt ALL my front and rear brake components, installed Moser axles in the amc 20, just added $40.00 of Royal Purple gear lube.....

The PO had new clutch pads put in before I bought the jeep. There's no problem on the street and I've had no problems with traction off road.

Would make driving on the snow nicer, though.
You aren't allowed off road? Hard to imagine, here in AiridZona!

That's right. There are no legal places to 4-wheel around here.
