i have play in my rear end when i turn it side to side, like before the gears engage or mesh together. do i need to add shims or what? i took the cover off and looked at the gears nothing looks worn or broken. supposedly this 67 cj5 has 31,000 original miles. if i need to shim how do i do it?

Check to make sure your pinion yoke is tight.
That would be the 1st thing.

you need a dial indiacator to read the 'play' in the gears.

    i recall 4-9thousands (.004-9) being correct.

More than likely it is worn spider/side gears, not the ring & pinion. I thought mine was trashed until I pulled the side gears to install a lock-rite locker. Nice & firm now! :D

shouldn't i be able to see wear marks? i am gonna replace the rear joints so i will check to make sure the yoke is tight first and go from there i suppose.

To properly check things out you'll have to pull the cover & clean the pumpkin out pretty good. As mentioned you'll need a dial indicator & also some "prussuion blue" gear marking goop. Read up on the procedure for checking backlash in the FSM, Dr. vern also has a good write up on this as well-

Might not be anything wrong with it. There will be some play if you are talking about turning the driveshaft.

yes, that is what i am talking about i'm thinking it might even be a bad u-joint it is making kind of a clunking sound when i take off. i guess when i change the joints i will be able to check the yoke and the joints.

The nut should be torqued to 200-220 lb ft

it only took a block of wood in front and back of the rear wheel and a 1/2 inch ratchet to get it off, and i didn't have to work at it that much. what causes these to get loose?

it's sad that it has taken me so long to find time to torque my pinion yoke, oh well. i torqued it to 215 ft lbs with a 3" extension and i still have play when i twist my drive shaft.
    next assignment, please.
