transmission for cj7

Just bought a 79 cj7,i want to upgrade the stock t-15 trans to a 4-speed.
any ideas what trans will bolt to an amc 360 and a dana 300 without to much trouble??
right now it has an amc 360,t15,dana 20.i have a d300 out of a 80 cj7,but the trans is a crappy sr4.any info would be great thanks ,john

 

The T-176 is a direct bolt-on for the 360/D-300.

Oh, the stock tranny is a T-150.

A t18 would make since.

SM 420 is good also but more $ adaptor ect.

 

Chuck's right on both counts. What's wrong with the T-150? Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade to a T-176, though that (or a T-15) would be the easiest not-T150/not-SR4/not-T4 transmission. Stronger than an SR-4, but I doubt a T-176 is much stronger than a T-150. Why do you want to change?

If you want stronger, a T-15 from a 72-75 CJ would be an upgrade. A truck 4-speed would give you the granny gear; much stronger, but not a bolt in. How about an automatic? A TH400 would fit, and a TH400-D20 fitment can be done with junkyard parts.
