I have a 74 CJ5 that still has the original tires and rims, want to replace the tires and keep the stock rims.

Any suggestions and what is the largest size that will fit the rims?

Much depends on how you will use the Jeep.

31x10.50-15 will fit nicely, without a lift. You might rub the front springs with the tire slightly when turned to full lock... if so, adjust the steering stops. The rear will rub on the inside of the wheelhouse when flexed/fully stuffed... don't worry, they all do that. Just spray some cheap black over the rub marks occasionally. :D

BFG A/Ts are great almost everywhere except in mud. For mud, consider BFG Mud terrains.
There are dozens of other tire brands to look at... BFGs fit my driving style very well.

You can go with 32 or 33" tires and no lift if you never go offroad. If you want these sizes and you do any offroading, you'll need to consider a 2.5" spring lift, appropriate longer bumpstops, maybe a 1" body lift or slightly longer (1" longer than stock) shackles.

    HTH!! :tea:

31's are abpout as tall as ya wanna go.. A few guys around here are runnin 33's, with some rubbing.. Some have done a body lift etc to accomodate the taller tire. A few just rub and are happy..

    Me? I run 31's.

With a wide tire and the stock rims, your turning radius will be reduced. The wide tires stick out beyond the rims and rub on the springs. I have this problem now with my Grip Spurs...

Check the tire manufacturer's web sites. They will give you a suggested rim width for each of the tires listed. The original wheels are 5.5" across, so I'd avoid a tire that has a maximum wheel size much beyond 6" wide.

I just put 31x10.50-15 Remington mud brutes on my cj-6 with the factory rims. The tire seems to be almost 3 inches taller than the H78-15 tires that I replaced, which is giving me about an 1 1/2" lift. I was looking at several tires and these have some good looking clean-outs for the black land clay I'll be driving in, but they are a soft tire and I doubt I'd want to use them on the pavement much. $117 a tire.

I'm not getting any rubbing, but I haven't turned sharp while having the front axle in a bind yet. These particular tires seem to fit wheel on my jeep and I have factory springs with no lift.

I'll try to get some pictures soon. For the price and for off road use, I've heard from several people that they like these particular tires and I think they'll do me well. Looks to me like the chance of rubbing is going to be a couple of bolt shafts sticking out from the inside fender wheel behind the axle. Hasn't yet though, but turning it sharp in the drive way I can just get my hand to barely slid between the tire and this point against the frame.

    Thanks
H78 15 are on it now, and they are cracked on the inside sidewalls.

I got her in a bit of bind last night and did get some rubbing. I'm still not concerned, but there you go, they will rub.

Rubbing on the inside of the rear fender wells is normal. They do that even with the factory tires.

I got her in some binds this weekend and noticed some rubbing on the rear inner fender wells as well. These are the 31x10.50 15 tires I mentioned.

That's a fine looking Jeep, Dave. My first CJ was Fairway Green, just like that. Brand new off the dealer's lot.
