    Hello all,

    Some dashboard questions:

First, I'm not 100% certain of the exact year of my CJ5. The title says '64, but the serial number (8305s238xxx) makes me think it might be a '67 or '68 even, if the information on some of the other websites is accurate.

Did Jeep ever install any additional, accessory type, gauges in the early CJ's? I know some of the later CJ's had a clock and maybe something else that the factory offered.

Mine has four gauges on the left side of the dash. Oil pressure, ammeter, temp and vacuum. I thought these had been added by a previous owner. However, when I pulled them out to look at some things it appears the holes may be "factory".

The holes are perfectly sized including the little notch on the bottom that aligns with the nub on the gauge. They are almost perfectly spaced and level with the dash. I've seen many holes added for gauges and it is usually obvious when you inspect them. Mine appear to be factory. Or at worst a dealer add-on maybe?

The gauges are all Stewart Warner but do NOT match each other as far as the style goes. The wiring is also not factory. It looks to have been cobbled together from whatever odd wire and connectors the person had handy. Although the wiring could have been changed/repaired/altered over the years.

Here are some pics and I'll post more if anyone wants something specific.

    Thanks,
    Charlie

I'll go out on a limb here and say they are not factory gauges. That a PO took the time and thought out the gauge placement.

Looks like you have a speaker? where the speedo used to be too as that's not the stock speedo location.

Those alignment notches at bottom of hole indicate being punched? Who would take the time, or have the proper tool to punch those holes except factory or dealer special order? Very interesting.

IMO the PO was skilled, and knew how to make these holes. Some people are skilled... :coffee: :)

Occasionally there's a radio in this spot, since there's room behind the dash here for stuff.

Now, what to do with all those holes? The cluster already has fuel level and coolant temp, and there's another hole by the cluster for oil pressure, so... volts, vacuum, clock... gauge for aux tank?

They may have been cut with hole saws but punches aren't that uncommon, most electricians have them as do many (all?) sheet metal shops. As for the notches if I was doing this I'd simply drill an appropriately sized hole hole for the notch before cutting/punching the larger one.

Thanks for all the replies. Maybe the holes are just well done. The wiring sure isn't. There is another gauge near the speedo cluster. This has had a rear gas tank added and that gauge is for that. And that hole has obviously been done much more crudely.

Here's a couple more dash pictures so you can see how differently the hole for the other gas gauge was done. Jpflat2a is right. The speedo is where it's supposed to be. The angle of that first pic just makes it hard to see.

I'm going to end up replacing the whole dash at some point. It seems really cluttered to me and I want to clean it up.

    Thanks again,

Yes, I can see it very clearly. I can also see that it doesn't work. And neither does the add-on fuel gage or the ammeter or the radio.

I also don't care for the gauges being on the left side of the dash. With them on one side and the speedo cluster on the other side it requires me to look two directions if I want to see everything.

That's one reason I'll be replacing the whole dash at some point. Right now I'm thinking I'll cover it with a piece of sheet metal I have. That way I can clean up the cluttered look by removing a bunch of stuff that doesn't work. Plus I'll mount things were they're more convienent.

The xnsfer case is a single lever type not the twin stick on the
    66? and before.

    Dabblin,

That's pretty much my thinking too. Single stick, 10" brakes, dual master cylinder, v-6. I'd say '67 or '68 and probably '68. Even though the title shows it as being a '64.
