Rear Mount Fuel Tank

    Have a jp 1a fuel tank which is the early 70's fuel tank. This is the tank that bolts to the frame. Has anyone installed this tank and What mods did you have to make? Has the 2" filler that is 6" long it it looks to me that it will have to be cut back to get over the frame rail. Am Planning on strapping to skid plate and bolting skid plate to frame rails although skid plate looks like it has to be bent to fit between frame rails. Any one done this conversion and can offer any tips?

    Yes: Looks very similar with the exception that I have 2 stubs on the left side of tank. Skid plate looks different than what I see on yours. Did you have to bend the skid plate to make it line up with the x members? Don't know how you got the 2 1/4 filler and the vent up over the frame rail. Will take picture in morning and post. Thanks for responding.

    Here are pictires of the tank and the skid plate. I have 14 1/2" between frame support and 25 1/2" between frame rails. Is that typical for a CJ? If not may have to move support? Have to bend skid plate 4" to fit. This is an M38 and don't know if this distance is different than a CJ but have a list of differences and does not indicate this for a change.

    regarding the two stubs onn the left side of the tank; if they are just vents, you could remove them and plug/solder them up and vent thru the filler vent.

    Two stubs are really not the problem. Can not get tank into position to get the 6" filler over the frame rail. Looked at posted pictures and tank is the same but there has to be more room between x members that allow room for install. Am really thinking that I need to move rear x member aprox 2" toward rear axle (don't know if there is a differance between CJ and M38 and that is the problem). That would give me the room for tank to fit between rear x members. Would advise others doing this conversion to purchase 76 and newer tank that has shorter filler stubs. Got this tank at a good price thinking it bolts to the frame. Any thought on moving x member?

    On my '71, the filler neck was flattened on the bottom so it would clear the frame rail. You can almost make that out in one of Clints pics.
    Additionally, the thank doesn't bolt directly to the frame rails, but it bolts to three brackets. One side like an S, one like a Z... you can see the tops of these above in the rear corners. These suspend the tank so that the crimped edge actually rides below the frame rail The 3rd support is in the front of the tank, and is more like a stretched/sideways U.

    On my '71, I installed a 1/2" lift on my fuel tank... added some shock bushings between the tank and the brackets.And of course, supplemented the ground.

    I did notice the brackets and realize that it is suspended and not mounted directly to the frame and yes the filler pipe is flattened on the bottom. Seems like there is not enough room between the 2 cross members. Only have 14 1/2". Wonder if the M38 has different spacing than the CJ. Also this tank is not a Crown but is built by a company called Spectra Premium near Montreal. Could grind off the rivets and and move x member to make it fit?

    Got it from a company called Carroll Equipment Company (wwwcarrollequipment.com). Tel #(315)685-3921. They are a heavy equipment company that was going out of the fuel tank business and had an add on E-bay. They are located in Skaneateles, NY. whikch is in the Syracuse area of N.Y.

    Wanted some opinions on moving rear cross member aprox 2-3" to fit tank from early 70's into an M38. Does anyone think it would create a problem to move x-member that distance? Looks like it is only a matter of grinding off the heads of some rivets and installing in new location with bolts?

    I have a 2" body lift on mine, and I put a custom tank in to clear the diff and such. This also entailed me moving the xmember forward. When I did it, I strengthened the bumper area to keep things together.

    I'll be doing the same thing to my CJ3a when the tank arrives in a couple of weeks. It looks like all 15 gallon replacement tanks are the same dimensions, even through different distributors. 25 1/4 x 18 1/4 x 10 7/8. The differences lie in the inlet tubes as you've noticed, as well as some mounting options for the intermediate CJ5 tanks. I just ordered the standard '78 and up 15 gallon tank with skidplate and all the hardware from 4wd.com. I'll wait until the tank arrives to find out how far forward to move the crossmember, but it's looking like only a couple of inches.

    I just went out and looked at the underside of the tub, and there shouldn't be any issue with moving the crossmember forward, as the tub is perfectly flat in that area. Also, you have about 3 or 4" there where you are still at the "flat and highest point" of the frame, so spacing between the tub and frame will be identical. There are two bolts which connect the tub to that crossmember, so you'll just have to drill a couple new holes.

    Thanks guys for your responses, I feel much better now. Thought I was the only one that ran into this problem and it was unique to the M38. Doing this conversion was not as straight forward as you might think from reading other threads. Never read one where they indicated they had to move the x member. Next problem will be to find the 2 1/2" filler neck. Will post pictures. Thanks again!!!

    Has anyone actually installed one of those mid 70's CJ5 tanks in their CJ2a or CJ3a. I am in the middle of my mock u,p to install a 70's style CJ5 gas tank, in my 2a frame with the CJ5 skid plate. It is looking like my rear axle is going to make contact when it is fully compressed. It fits well otherwise, but I will have to make a clearance notch in the frame, where the filler next goes above on the right side. I have the same tank as in the pictures in the earlier post. I may have to lower the bumpstops to keep the axle pumpkin from making contact. I have searched through several threads on the subject but none have followed through with answers or pictures. I have seen that a postal jeep tank could work easier, as it seems to be a couple of inches shorter front to back. I would like to make this work, as I have already bought i,t and have started modifying it to fit. I will try to post pictures of what I have so far.
