If I wanted to tow my Jeep without the use of a trailer, would I be better off removing the rear driveline or is it good to put the TC (Dana 18 twin stick) in neutral? I am not upgrading to rear hubs any time soon :).

Search flat + towing. It's been covered exhaustively; lots of good info to sift through.

We've discussed this extensively, lots of info if you search.

In a nutshell.... with your D18, put the D18 into neutral, the tranny in high gear, unlock your front hubs, and tow as far as you want. No need to disengage the rear driveline with a D18, unless you really want to.

There is tons of info on this here just use the search tool.

I will give you my opinion.
Take out the rear drive shaft and unlock front hubs.

You can put Tcase in neutral. But.........., trans then needs to be in gear.
Reason is the trans will turn over when towing but not oil it self in neutral.
It can fry it pretty quick.

Also your bearing's need to be in good shape they work great at 45 but 65 down the highway for extended periods will kill them when you dont expect it.

Personaly I want to know it wont pop out of gear on the road so I take out the driveline.

You can get tons of opinions on this here back and forth:)

Last time i towed with t case in neutral and rear drive line connected the nut on the rear output shaft walked off and the whole pbrake drum and yoke came off at about 65 and exploded the back of the tcase and the output shaft on tcase. needed new pbrake drum, yoke, and output shaft. so take the cheap and easy way and unbolt dshaft from rear axle and tie it up to frame and don't worry, its easy and it takes about 5 minutes to do. better than the 150$ and 4 hours of work to repair the potential damage.

Just a month ago, I towed my CJ-5 (D-20 case) 2100 miles with the transfer case in neutral and the tranny in 3rd gear. I have seen NO problems at all, either during the trip or after using it as a daily driver since. (I did have an unrelated problem with the pulleys, but that is of no concern here)
I was at times running over 75 MPH while towing, averaged about 65 or so...

as always, take it for whats its worth...

Long trips I remove the drive shaft , short trips I leave it in . Ive smoked my tranny at windrock on the trail so its not in the best shape which makes me wonder about the t case . I look at the the drive shaft out as insurance ,especially with 5.38 gearing.
