'77 CJ5 tailgate

    I don't think that the tailgate size changed from '45 to '87, hinges might have but the tailgate size did not to the best of my knowledge.

    Replacement looks right to me. What's wrong with it to you?

    The picture on the 4wd.com site is wrong - that's the 'plug' tailgate that was used on the CJ-7.

    You need the rear panel to fill the gaps between the side panels and the tailgate, and the CJ-5/6 tailgate that goes on the outside of the body. Classic Enterprises calls the filler panel the 'tailight panel', and shows a couple of pictures of the right tailgate http://www.classicent.com/jeep.php

    :? Why is the picture wrong? It says it's a steel tailgate. It looks like a tailgate to me.

    Sure the earlier ones had "Willys" on them but a CJ-5 would have "Jeep" on it by this time or am I missing something here?

    Hmm, I've had two '77's. One had rear mount tire on a blank panel, and the other had the same tailgate I have on my '73. I assumed it was an option...

    I think it's the '73 type one I want with "JEEP" scripted on it.
    BUT having said that I have heard of late (AMC) CJ5s without tailgates as you describe.
    Being as mine is already butchered around the tailgate aparture, I'm just wondering if anyone does a replacement "solid" panel for the non tail gate version?
    Oh, timgr, many thanks for that link, that looks like some quality sheet metal in comparison to the stuff coming from the Phillipenes.

    That looks like a very late CJ-7 tailgate to me.

    Yep that picture is of a cj7 tailgate. If yours came with a tailgate, a standard cj5 tailgate will fit. Is it possible yours had the panel in it and didn't have a taillgate?
