    Bogging issue (long post)**UPDATED**

Guys, here to just run by my latest issue...after all the glory of finally plowing with Grumpy he became true to his name today for his second storm. I think this was a self inflicted setback, after last Thurs. storm I went and did an oil change considering I believe I have a gas-in-oil issue from my fuel pump, well I went with (don't shoot me) straight sae 40 and also added a "no-smoke'w/stop leak additive. After the fresh blood I started him up and ran fine, wasn't smoking much at all (go figure that crap really worked) I thought great, backed it into the garage and had him all set up for todays storm. I go out around 930-1000am and fire it up, all is well or so I thought, I go to pull around to the front drive and lo and behold he won't go..idling a tad rough but nothing unusual...let out the clutch and he bogs to a stall...re-fired and rev'd him up let out the clutch again...same thing, though I saved him from stalling completely this time...well about 45 min. later and I made it to my front garage with the help of my wife. For the next 2 hrs with the help from my wife(go figure and god bless her as I didn't have the heat on and it was about 25* in the garage)we trouble shot everything..spark..check, fuel...check(found and fixed a leaking line at the pump) still nothing...pull the plugs and by now they were damp...dry and reload them...vroom he fired right up...let the motor warm up, hop in and let the clutch out....bogged to a stall again. Now after all this the light bulb went off in my head...could it be that the oil is way,way to thick? and is putting too much of a load on the little old f-head? My thinking is yes, but wanted to see what other opinions are, as I am pretty damn good as far as mechanics go, but am no certified mech. Sorry for the long post but mind you I am recovering from nerve surgery in my left arm(yes working on your Jeep one handed is really frustrating but I was up for a challenge) and have a feeling that my mind is more clouded than I think from my wonderful pain meds. So fire away...whatcha think??

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    doubtful in my opinion
engine would hardly turn over in cold weather if that was the case

You should really be running a lighter oil, but that being said I don't think it would cause bogging after you warmed her up. When you pulled the plugs you said they were wet, was it gas? You said you changed the oil 'cause you thought you had gas in it. Did you fix that? You could have a stuck or gummed up float. That would also put gas in the oil, and make the engine bog down. There are a lot of other things it could be, but thats shooting from the hip!

could you have a stuck choke?
That would let it idle but not let it drive. (like when you try to warm up a small gas motor on a cold morning)

Unless the engine is worn out you definitely need a thinner oil, at least 10/30 maybe thinner. Did you check point adjustment? How about timing, maybe it's retarded?

has your jeep have an oil bath air cleaner? i had an oil bath that had gotten water from condensation in it and froze in the wire mesh gause in it and was blocking the air flow.mine would also idle rough and bog. i pulled the air cleaner hose off and ran like a charm then.

This really sounds like a fuel delivery issue. I'd have a looksee inside the carb bowl and replace the fuel filter. Also, you mentioned a possible bad fuel pump; if it's questionable, replace it. No sense risking trashing the bearings if the oil is diluted with fuel..

Nope but i sure am...guess my meds are messing up my thinking more than I thought. It dawned on me at 5 am today that my 2.5 y/o son was in the Jeep playing around driving and stuff, well I went out and wouldn't you know he thought that 4-HI was a better option for snow wheeling...he guessed wrong. the snow/sleet mix we have had here was about 6" or so from both storms and it had gotten really wet and loose yesterday, so I think that the gearing wasn't low enough to pull through the "stuff" kinda makes sense now cause it would move like 2-3 feet before bogging...hmmm, now I just need to test my theory later today as its Daddy Daycare today with 3 boys to watch, so I'll be wrenching during naptime. What you guys think...could that have been the problem??

good possibility that high range was too high, going to the other end of the jeep now,is it possible that you have water in the diff? and it is froze? not saying that thats it just thought of it, keep us posted

Well...I went out at naptime and it fired right up...low range and it moved without stalling, though it basically just idled...throttling up would stall it out...I think this Carter has seen its last day as is...a rebuild or Solex is in my future...was able to get it back in its bay now its time to start spinning wrenchs...thanks to all who replied...I just may start my resto a bit early.

sounds like accelerator pump is bad if it wont take fuel, tried it with the choke partially closed? glad you are back on track
