Hey, Got a 71 cj5 recently with a power steering convertion. Box is blown and don't know what it's from to replace it. Is this a stock CJ box? Has three mounting holes. sorry pics are fuzzy. Thanks.

I just took mine to the local FLAPS and the got me a box with the same part number.

That box isn't the heavy duty four bolt box. That box has the smaller input shaft. So if you replace it with the heavy duty one you will have problem mounting it up. FYI

If it's a Saginaw, it should have a script "S" with a box around it cast into the case or cover. A Ford will have the blue oval somewhere.

AFAIK all the full-size Saginaw boxes use the same bolt pattern, so an exact match isn't critical. 3-bolt and 4-bolt will interchange with/without the 4th bolt.

Ok great, thats good to know. Is there one with a better ratio then others? I don't want the stearing to touchy. Thanks guys.

There are many ratios for them - you want one for a 'heavey' car - not the camaro version :) . Best way to tell is to count rotations from lock to lock and go with the one with the most.

I guess I should have said. Mounting the steering shaft to the box not the way it mounts.

Scott, are the heavy duty 4 bolt ones typicaly the ones with more turns lock to lock like warloch is talking about? It's hard to tell how many turns lock to lock on mine as it just keeps turning and turning and the wheels don't move.R) How many turns am I looking for? Thanks guys

Mine are about 4 lock to lock... I can check this weekend if you need me to.

Got to heat the shop and dig out my 'steering' box to get them - it's 14 right now and it supposed to get colder ;)

Mine is a Camaro box and I think it's about 2-3/4" turns for reference.

Jeeps used 4 1/4 turns lock to lock, large GM cars can be from 3 1/2- 4 1/4 turns, Camaros , Novas and the sportier cars will be 2 3/4 turns.
Not all Saginaw boxes have the S script on them, most but not all. I have 2 of them that don't. What you have appears to be a 800 series saginaw which is the most common. The 800 series boxes share the same bolt pattern between the 3 and 4 bolt models, just missing one bolt. There are also flare fitting models and o-ring models when it comes to the hoses. The input shaft can be 3/4"-30 spline or 13/16"-36 spline depending on year and model.
This casting number (5691676 ) should get you a 4 1/4 turn box with 13/16"-36 spline input shaft with 4 bolt mount.

I went with an AGR super box 2 and their superpump for my conversion on a 55 cj5.
it's an aftermarket 4 bolt mount saginaw box with variable ratio, I think it's 13:1and 16:1 at highway speed. it's about 3 turns lock to lock, and not as sharp at higher speeds, haven't got it back on the highway yet. ordered mine through summit racing, a bit pricey but beats the junkyard or kragens.

There's a writeup on rebuilding this steering box in the recent FOUR WHEELER magazine. Fairly good pictures of the process. Anybody done it? If so is it worth it?

I went to Advance Auto, ordered a rebuilt box from Lares Corp for a '75 CJ5.
It was 4-bolt, flared fittings. Matched up to my conversion perfectly.
Cost of a rebuilt box was $150 after core.
Advance Auto won't tell you they can get Lares boxes, they want to push something else... but they will get them if you ask... check prices on their website.

Look up
www.Larescorp.com for more info on their rebuilds, ratios, and selection of boxes.
