Hey everyone. I finally found a swing away tire carrier that I'm hopefully going to get. It says that it's for a cj7 but it looks it will fit on the back of my Jeep. I have a 73 Cj5, but the tail lights have been switched to the rectangular style (like on the newer ones) and have been relocated to where the newer ones are mounted. I guess my question is are the back of the cj7's body wider than the 73 cj5's. Just wondering if the back of my Jeep's body would be wide enough to mount it on. Thanks for the help!

Not wider, but a different tailgate. There may be reinforcements in the CJ-7 body to support the tire carrier.

Gotcha. I was going to put in some steel backing plates to reinforce the body. Thanks.

Not wider, but the CJ5 frame does not extend back far enough to mount latter model bumpers on. I had to weld two c-channels on to the frame to tend out about 2" to mount my new body armor bumper.

I used to have a tire carrier mounted to my jeep body. It was through bolted into the back of the fenders. After about 4-5 yrs, it fatigued the body metal so bad that I had to take it off. I suggest you reconsider mounting it to your body. I really like my setup from cross enterprises.
Would you like to see some pictures ?

that is a nice looking spare tire mount. also, i hate to hijack the thread but... juicysjeep are those the stock tail lights for a 73? when i bought mine it had two different sets on it and one was smashed and the other had a ford sticker on the back. ive been trying to figure out what they are supposed to look like. thanks.

I'm not the original poster, but yes, those are right. Correct placement too.

The left one should have a clear window in the bottom to light the license plate. There should also be a plate bracket that's held between the body and the light assembly.

    Yes, what timgr said.
With the new bumper, I had to relocate my license plate to where it's shown. I was fortunate enough to have saved a spare set of these lights from way back. I can't find em anymore.
