I just replaced my motorola system in my 1973 cj5 with the '75 delco system and I need to know if there is a special socket that you need for the alternator light. Over the years the alternator light has disappeared form the jeep. Also how is it wired in. The old system was wired to the voltage regulator and fuel gage. Since I have an internal regulator now is it wired the same way? If it does need a special socket where can you find one?

special socket? I don't follow you. The alternator light, if I remeber correctly, is...switched 12 volts into a lightbulb, then out of the bulb to the prong on the alternator. you need a light bulb with two wires going to it and not one that ground via the socket.

what I have found is a socket that has a plastic case. one wire through the middle and another that is mounted on the base. when a known hot is put through the wire it grounds through the wire at the base.

The main issue here is the resistance from the "sense wire connector" on the alternator back to the light then to the key switch. It helps the regulator determine when to make more juice to charge the battery. It's low ohms, I forget the value, but it seems to me that it is important to get that part right for the charging to work just right. I'd like to hear from someone on that cuz I just put a Delco style LoadBoss alternator in and I think I need either the light or the resistor to make the charging system right.... right? :?

I put a 18 gauge wire as the service manual states from the light to the white wire on the alt. light comes on when key is on. light turns off after engine starts.

If there isn't a light or resistor on that line, the jeep won't shut off. It will just backfeed and keep running

If you run switched power to the bulb and the other to the White or brown wire from the alt plug it will work. No special bulb required. It really is that simple.
