I have a 1970 cj5, and am having issues figuring how out to connect the brakelight switches. I have read alot on the switches, problem im having is how to connect to the switches.
Is there a negative and positive on those switches?
Do both switches have to be used in order for brake lights to work?
Does anyone have pictures showing how them have the actual switches connected?
I am used to this stuff so I would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks

It's just 12V power in one side and the line to the brake lights goes out on the other. They are grounded through the MC. Only one is necessary.

    Welcome from KS!

See our wiring diagrams in the Tech Library for more.

Does it not matter which line goes where, I see no marking on the switch.

That is what i thought. Is there a specific connector i should use to connect the wire to the switch?
I also have one more question, just down from the rear brakelight switch on the brake line, is another switch. This one is a female switch. The other two are male switches. One is up front, the 2nd is mounted on the frame, then the third(the female is about 1 foot from the 2nd switch. This female switch was connected to the the tailights. I do not know what this is for.
I cannot find anything describing this switch in any of the wiring diagrams.
    Any thoughts on this.

There is one in the front brake lines and one in the rear brake lines. because of the dual mc if you lost either front or rear brakes due to some failure in the lines or wheel cylinders, the brake lights would still work regardless of front or rear failure. if only one switch was present say in the rear portion of the system and you rear lines lost pressure you would have no brake lights.

If anyone has information on that third female switch on the brake line, it would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible it was put there to replace the the rear brakelight switch?

I've got a 70 and it only has the two pressure switches - don't know what the third one is doing.

Note that it's sometimes difficult to get a good electrical connection on these switches, meaning your brake lights don't.

You can get the pressure switch from NAPA that has screw on terminals instead of the standard slide on. Just a thought.

No, the originals have flat head stubs that the wire connector slides on - they work good unless they get old and there's mud involved.
