Howdy I have a 53 M38A1 134 F head with a carter YF carb on it and its starting to load up alot on accelleration thinking of rebuilding it . I checked the float setting its fine. Have any of you had any luck with rebuilding these or should I have it done? Second do any of you use another type of carurator on a 134 F-head that I may be able to buy new? Ill take all suggestions.

Midwest Military puts together a great kit for rebuilding the Carter. I purchased the kit and had a carb. shop do the rebuild. The old guy who rebuilt my carb said that the kit I supplied was the best and most complete kit he's ever seen and he's been doing carbs for 40 years. As I remember, the kit was around $50.00. The rebuild cost me another $100, but was well worth the money as I've never rebuilt a carb before and was apprehensive about all the small parts. Stay original is my opinion! Good luck!

I bought my 'A1 in June. It ran really rich, especially crawling out of my creek, etc. I have run a bottle of Techron FI cleaner in my tank at every fill since then ... marked improvement. On a parallel thought, making sure the dwell and initial advance is correct (or more advanced) was critical in my case for overall performance.
As I have learned from this site and others, make sure your throttle plate shaft journals are good enough that a rebuild isn't a waste of money.
Out of curiosity, what YF do you have? I have a "951 SA" ... which seems to not be the norm.

These folks are supposed to have some of the best kits out there. http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/ And I'm not positive, but I think the M38A1's had a different carb than the CJ's, didn't they? Seems like it....

Also, a lot of guys have changed from the YF to the Solex, and swear by them. I understand they're supposed to be a drop-on replacement, and usually right fine right out of the box (may need minor tweaking). Most Jeep parts peddlers have 'em, or can get 'em. Cheapest price I've seen online is $115, but I don't remember where offhand. Might try a Froogle search.

As far as the YF's, I hear the 938SD model is the best one, I managed to score one from another member that went to a Solex. But yeah, if the throttle shaft or it's bushings are worn out, it'll suck air and won't run right. Very important little detail. With the engine running, spray something flammable, like starting fluid, around the bottom of the carb. If it's sucking air, you'll know it by the RPM change.

Just make sure you get a good kit, and that it's for the model carb you have. There's a lot of different "Carter YF's" out there, and not just for Jeeps. I've heard unpleasant things about the typical kits from your FLAPS, I'm going to use one from The Carb Shop myself, FWIW.

Try a good fuel system additive/cleaner first, though. Ya never know, it might fix 'er right up! Maybe some plugs and points too, couldn't hurt. Try the cheap and easy stuff first.

    JMHO, YMMV.

I had a YF on an M38A1 rebuilt to no avail. When I got my CJ I went to the solex and haven't looked back. If originality is not a prime concern, a Solex is well worth the money and, from the sound of it, may be cheaper than paying someone after buying a good rebuild kit.

as said all depends on the overall condition of your carb,i rebuilt a carter model wo on my l head and it runs as good as new,:note: i had to buy a gollon can of carb cleaner and soak it for a week, but it was a low mileage carb that had set for around 20 years, dirt gunk and mud dobers had their way with it since it had no aircleaner in place, just depends on what you got to work with  prob going to go with a solex on the f head install though since it is going to be a compleate overhaul, may try to rebuild the yf first though:beer:

If you're comfortable with rebuilding a carb, it's not hard. A FLAPS kit should be under $20. If you need a float it will be a might be more.

If your not comfortable with the rebuilding it yourself, it's probably more economical to get a Solex. Krage has them for $112. Before I replaced my F-head with a V6 I had added the Solex and was very pleased. It took about 10 mins to install and ran great out of the box with no adjustments. YMMV.

Do a google or what ever your favorite search engine is for the Solex.R)

I found one place last week that had them for 89 or 87 bucks depending on F- or L-head configuration. Don't remember who had them, I don't have the money right now.:):hurrican:
