I just got my first jeep today, its a 73 CJ5 with the 304 2 barrel carb. She seems to be running a little rich. Does anyone no where I can get a factroy service manual? I think it may come in handy.

Lover driving it, but have a few things to work out, IE steering wanders and brakes, or should I say lack there-of, IE 4 drums.

    any help is appreciated.

    Howdy from W. MI.

Those 11" drums will put you through the w/s when they're working right. While they might not have the stopping power of discs when wet, you have the brakes that alot of us with earlier Jeeps upgrade to.

I do believe that the 73 has a Motorcraft 2100 carb in it.. You can check by looking for a circle on the float bowl, drivers side with a number in it.. The number is the venturi.. Pony Carbs in Las Cruces will do a rebuild and re cailbration if you need it.. I just installed a 2100 on my 304 replacing a Holley that the PO installed and love it..

I did a disc conversion on the '73 D30 front axle I have in my '67. It was relatively painless. I used the GM calipers and brackets and the thick CJ discs. Basically the same as converting a D27 to discs except you have to re-drill the brackets to clock them correctly. There is a conversion article on theis site for the D27 that will help greatly. Also, you can reference the disc conversion at the JP Magazine website. My front disc conversion cost me about $300

I believe yopu can use the outers and rotors from a newer ('76 or so?) Dana 30 and its a bolt on.

Disclaimer: this is from memory and might be off a little or entirely untrue, but I don't think so.

I went the route packrat2A mentioned. I bought a complete D30 with all new disk brakes on it for $200. (had a lockrite and 4.56 gears too) All I did then was swap from the knuckle out onto mine. Even if you have to buy all new parts if you can find a 6 bolt disk brake front end to use for cores it isn't very expensive.

If it IS an MC2100 carb, it is the easiest rebuild EVER! It can be done with outstanding results in 30 minutes with a butter knife on the first try. (I am not being sarcastic).

For the steering, chances are the prob is in that union that connects the steering box to the steering shaft. It is a POS. I solved my road wander by replacing the steering shaft with the flaming river one. Paint it before installing it. The shaft LOOKS beautiful out of the box, but develops wicked surface rust after about 1 month.

The steering shaft replacement was the 2nd best upgrade. (The #1 one is ditching my holley for an MC2100 that I rebuilt in 30 minutes.)
