I have a chance to get a older scout, not to sure the year yet but i know it either a 80 or 800 model. if it has dana 44's i want to put them under my jeep. i have been reading about doing this and would like to know if the front can be swapped in w/o outboarding the springs? also if it doesnt have 44's and it has 27's will the carrier assembly fit my 27 in the front of my jeep? the reason i ask is b/c the owner said it had a trac-loc in the front but he didnt know what axle it was a 27 or 44.

The early scout dana 27 will fit. the only differnce is i think the scout shafts are a touch longer than the jeep axle shafts, but it is still a dana 27. I have the guts of one, a friend gave me when he swapped out axles. I am not sure abotu the scout 44 installed without outboarding. The only issue with the scout 44 is the caster is differnt than the jeep and the pinion will be lower because the scout was longer.

I believe the Scout axles are 5" wider than the Jeep axles. I don't think a Trac Loc would be worth the effort if you are putting it in just for that. Before you get too far, check out the passenger side spring mount on the front axle. It will be your limiting factor as to what you can do to re-mount the springs.

You can do this but since the scout axle was built with 0* castor this will cause your pinion to point at the ground. You would be better off cutting the knuckles loose and rotating them to the correct angle and then rewelding them. If it were me I would outboard the springs, it will make the rig much more stable. I have a friend that did this same thing with front and rear dana 44's on his 77 cj5, the thing handles awesomely, he also did a shackle reversal when he did it.

i had thought about outboarding the springs but didnt want to cut the stock hangers off the chassis as it is in perfect shape. i wasnt swapping for the trac-loc i want the extra width, lockers are in the works as well.
