I posted not to long ago about finding on a 304v8 for my jeep (orginally had a 304) well I found out that the engine is seized and so now looking for others to replace it. When going from the 304 to a 360 I would assume it will need to be a 360 from a wagoner or other jeep to fit correctly. is that true or will most 360's fit right in? is there a long block and short block for the 360? I am really trying to locate an engine so that I can get the jeep running.

The 304 and 360 are basically the same engine except for displacement. The stroke is the same, but the bore size is different. The 304 will have different heads with smaller valves to prevent interference with the smaller bore size.

A rusted-out Wagoneer would be a good source, since those got the 360 until they ended in '92.

It has to be an AMC 360, from a Jeep or an AMC car. There are Dodge and Ford 360s, but they have nothing in common with the engine you want except their displacement.

You'll need a 360 flywheel, but the 360 will just bolt in for the 304 otherwise.

Sure, you can get a long or short block for just about any engine. These are terms that are usually applied to engines from a remanufacturer though. If you buy an engine from a junkyard or private party, it will be a complete engine.

I feel your pain, crimedog! I'm in the same boat (my thread: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45867 )
If you have have some 'trick' parts on the 304 (Intake, carb, ect) they swap right over to a 360. As was mentioned in my thread, you might want to put a new timing chain set in, check main bearings, maybe cam lobes and bearings, etc.
Just remember, there's no replacement for displacement!R)
(BTW, where are you located? Odds are there is somebody near to you.)

It’s my understanding that 91 was the last year Wagoneers came with the 360.

Yeah, I thought so too, but the IFSJA drivetrain database shows 1992 as the last year. I looked before I posted, so that's why my post says 1992.

Supposedly only 4 were built in 92 to fulfill previous orders.

I am in Manti Utah. and I am fully new to the jeep thing. This jeep was my grandpas and threw a rod 20 years ago. It has sat in his back yard since then. I finally got around to cleaning out the inside yesterday and after 20 years of dirt, leaves, spiders, wasps, hornets..... I had to take the hose to it. It is now semi clean.

I did find an engine in a junk yard here about 35 miles away that is from a wagonere that runs. but my mechanic can't install it for a month. and since I have no idea what I am doing as of yet....

There is nothing better to cut your budding mechanics teeth on, than these ol' girls! :smash: They're pretty straight forward, and when you do run into problems, the fellas (and gals) can send you the right direction!

    I agree! :iagree:
If ever there was an engine swap to start with it would be AMC V8 to AMC V8in an early CJ!
