I think my pressure plate went south

I installed a new cable a few months ago after the old one snapped. I have been adjusting it every few weeks until today it seems like it stretched out. There is a curl behind the first attachment point.

The clutch itself is good but I think the fingers on the pressure plate are bent. After adjusting the cable, I depressed the clutch pedal and that is when the stretching of the cable occurred. No matter how much pressure I applied to the pedal it wouldn't entirely release. I am stumped but my bet is the pressure plate failed.

I wasn't looking forward to pulling the tranny out but it would be a good time since I do have some drips to take care of.

    Any ideas on this one?

Just make sure that everything looks OK in the entire loop of the cable before you pull the tranny. Just to eliminate the cable and any of it's attachments as the problem. Rent a good tranny jack if you have to pull it. Good luck.

I will be looking at the cable tonight. I have another new one, might just throw that one on instead of messing around with the one already on.

    Something ain't right.

I have seen pressure plates fail in interesting ways.
If it is a borg & beck, 3 finger then it is possible that one of the fingers broke off. Meaning that you can't release the clutch. You might be able to spot this by peeping into the shift fork hole.

Binding on the bearing retainer is also possible.

It could even be like my dump truck which shifted, but made weird noises. Until it flew apart. There was no bearing retainer at all..... I wonder how they broke that one???

    Good luck!

I didn't get a chance to look in the peep hole or replace the clutch cable. I don't know what kind of pressure plate is on there either. There weren't any noises at all.

I will report back when I find something. Thanks.

Friday night I took the tranny out and I found my problem. The throw-out bearing occasionally binds on the transmission input shaft. The clutch and the pressure plate are find and I will reuse them.

This leads me to my next question which should be a new thread...

How does the clutch fork and throw-out bearing come off???
