You sure? There should be a small hole in the driver side axle tube, about half way across, on the back side....

That's why I asked about the year for Wmunnys axle. I would have expected it to just have the small hole. :?

Wherever it is, there has to be a vent. The heating and cooling with driving will cause pressure, and it has to go somewhere.

Heating and cooling will cause expansion. Only pressure if there is no vent.
Mine appears to be the pressurized version also.

If there where no vent you would blow axle seals. Period.

My M38A1 has the vent in the cover over the filler.

Quick while you are at it. Would a moddy please add the pics to the Gallery in the axle section. Its these type of "thousand word" pics that are not in the service manual. OBTW my vent D44 is on the passenger side. A threaded 1/4 inch pipe about 3/4 long with the Abe Lincoln hat on it. 4.27 1967 cj5 f134

Here's pics of my non vented D44. It came from a 1966 4 banger, 5.38 ratio. The seals on these axles can't keep water out, I'm fairly certain they can't keep air in (build pressure) either.

Are you sure it isn't vented? Or at least that the hole isn't there plugged up with C***?

FWIW I welded up the one shown in my earlier post, gonna add a hose fitting to the pumpkin & run a hose up nice & high a'la the military setup.

The seals are inboard of the bearings, obviously they won't keep the water out of the bearings but they should keep it out of the housing. If you're getting water in there I'd say the lack of a vent is causing the housing to suck water in past the seals when you immerse them & they cool off.
