    Sparky, or y'all in general, that tech article for redoing the steering, what is shown is a 70 model, but would that "SAME" rig work on a 75 CJ5? I have the exact issues with mine, sloppy steering when sober. :) If that stuff works on a 75, I'd like to do just that on mine!!!! Awesome if so! :beer: I'm willing to do something a bit more aggressive but just having tight steering would be SUPER DUPER!

    No, the '75 setup is completely different from a '70. Not applicable.

    If you bring everything up to spec on a '75, you won't have any bump steer.

    Fix or replace the worn out parts, adjust the steering geometry, and it will be fine.

    If you search through the old posts, you'll find a lot of posts about sloppy steering and wander at highway speed. This condition is not normal, and results from worn out, broken or misadjusted steering and suspension parts.

    What Tim said.

    Check tie-rod ends, check and replace (if necessary your steering box), ball joints, etc.

    Should be much easier than what was done by Jim in the article for the Ross steering setup. :beer:

    +1. I'm driving a 75, with factory power steering. The PS, combined with the bus wheel, make the steering very sensitive, Kinda reminds me of the old Chrysler PS from the late 50's-60's. But here is no bump steer, it goes right where I point it, without a stabalizer. Jack it up, get under it and start wiggiling stuff..that'll give you a good start.

    Wallowed out leaf spring bushings let the axle chart its own course, too. So if your springs have been in place for more than a few years it might pay to pull the shackles off and have a looksee.

    Yes, to all the above, my 75 CJ is "still" mostly factory! So yeah the bushings are old, the springs are dull, everything wiggles like a typical ol lady, so nip/tuck is in order here fo sho. What would be helpful is a list of all the stuff I need OR a kit OR two kits: (1) front end redo and (2) springs - rear too while I'm at it. My frustration is that all the places I look, START AT '76!!! ergo, earlycj5 to the rescue!

    Yeah, the CJ for the 1976 model year was a complete makeover by AMC from the venerable Kaiser-Willys design. The intermediates (72-75) incorporate several modernizations to the earlier platform, such as the AMC engines, new front axle, upgraded steering and brakes, among others. These years (72-75) seem to be the least well supported by the aftermarket of all the CJ jeeps.

    Most of the stuff you need is stock parts, and can in many cases be sourced from your local parts store. there are no kits as such, except for replacement spring kits. First, do you have the factory service manual? Second, read through old posts about the typical problem areas, such as steering box, flex coupler, spring bushings, frame cracks, and so forth.

    yepper, that's what I need, a manual. Anybody got that on PDF format? That'd be killer, then I could shove some printouts in front of the dude at AutoZone and see if he can match em up. gonna run over to ebay for a visit to see what shakes out. or a Haynes manual, anybody know if that will suffice? Oh, thanks to all the advice on the 304 carbs in the other thread, that helped me out a lot, I have the MC2100 on my 304 and setting them all the way in, then out two turns WORKED PRETTY GOOD! :beer:

    4wd.com carries 72-75 suspension parts and runs sales often. You can buy a complete suspension kit for your 75 like ProComp or Rancho - lifted or stock height. Tierods, ends, shackles, bushings, etc can be purchased there also.

    Mine was a bone stock 74 and had to go through and replace everything.

    I think I might do that too GMan, too much ruff stuff on mine, I can't even turn some of the rods at all, too rusted up. I'll go over to 4wd and take a look. Maybe you could shoot me your # and I'll come look! my email is sc_fxdxt at yahoo dawt com and thanks for that source.

    I invested in a set of air tools and a compressor. Made it easier, still had to use a BFH and curse a lot. If your gonna be over by Lexington and or the Lake send me a PM. I live near the dam.

    I found an electronic 75 TSM at themotorbookstore.com for under 50 bucks. Also, I went to 4wd, screen printed their tie rod assembly, emailed them and said "gimme a list" of all the stuff to see if they want my business. WORK?? OH NO!! I'll bet they don't send me a list! Anyway, the TSM on disk should give me a great start. My ol doll is getting a coat of polyurethane coating in the back and floor - pix to be shown later.
