spare axles

    my dad recently aquired a nova that someone has converted into a four wheel drive vehicle using jeep running gear and they did and soa but i think they just flipped the axles is this safe? and could they be put into my jeep? i know this sounds stupid but hey i was just curious

    Not enough information - there are decades worth of axles from Jeeps and they're not all a straight swap.

    What do you mean by "flipped the axles?" The only possible way to convert from SUA to SOA is to move the spring packs from the bottom of the axle to the top. There is no way you can "flip" an axle and make it work.

    well there dana 44's and it looks like they just turned the axle over and the spring perches upward and slapped the springs on

    That would make it drive in reverse.

    Not to mention putting the drop on the opposite side of the vehicle...

    Yeah - the usual way to do that is to cut off the spring perches and put them on the top of the axle. Maybe that's what you're seeing?

    off the subject,sort of ,i built a demo car a couple pf years ago (78 dodge st regis)and to get the rear of the car higher we flipped the rear axle.yep u guessed it 1 forward gear and three reverse gears:)

    While three reverse gears and one forward gear is an annoyance, the older CJs had decently bright reverse lights which almost suffice as headlights. The steering axle (do I call it front or rear?) will have reversed the caster angle so if you must travel at highway speeds please be sure to do it going backwards so your steering isn't erratic. The real pain in the butt is that your pinion bearing will eat itself because it's up in the air instead of down in the gear lube.
