It only seems to happen after a long run and I can stop it by holding the clutch all the way to the floor for about 2 seconds before shifting into gear, but when giong uphill I lose alot of momentum diong this

I'm running a f134 with stock trans. (Iknow that don't help but I havn't positively identified it yet)

Any adjustments or is it an operator malfunction???

Probably the 2nd gear blocking ring is worn out.

    If it's a 3-speed, it would be a Borg-Warner T-90 from the factory.

Replace it (overhaul) or learn to double clutch.

Double clutch? Funny my buddy just asked me if I do that yesterday....Would you be so kind as to explain this double clutch techniqe?? I've heard it mentioned regarding big rig's but fail to understand the method/reason.

I'd like to wait on an overhaul if possible short on $$$$ and trying to get body, paint, snowplow ready for winter since I still don't have a garage

Matches the speed of the gears by revving the engine in neutral between gears. Called double clutching because you need to depress the clutch twice to shift gears.

You shouldn't have to double-clutch upshifting around town if you shift at the right speed. The speed of the next gear will match as the gears spin down. Helps to drive like a grandpa though. The Borg-Warner 3-speeds are not fast shifters anyway.

you push the clutch to the floor and let it out as you pass the neutral position while shifting then push it to the floor again and finish the shift.

oops ... too late tim got there first ;)

Well, if you think about it, the front half of the transmission (input and cluster gear) is connected to the engine by the clutch, and the back half (main shaft) is connected to the axle. You're matching the speed of the two halves using the throttle. You can only do this in neutral with the clutch out.

You should ride with me in my J-10 - its 2nd blocking ring is pretty worn. You'd pick up the technique after a while.

BTW prior to the 30s (?), transmissions were unsynchronized (crash boxes), and double-clutching was part of learning to drive.

i've only ever done it downshifting on my previous 47 when the synchros wore out. never up shifting though.

thanks for the explanation. makes sense.

I learned double clutch driving in my '67 Triumph Spitfire, as stated before stab the clutch, pull the gear shift into neutral, let clutch out, blip the throttle, stab the clutch, down shift. This technique works for down shifting into non syncro first gear. I double clutch my tractor all the time, it has no syncros at all (hand throttle though). Kind of fun when you master it. If I am braking I use my instep/side of my foot, to blip the throttle.

:shock: I'm liking this jeep more and more....I spend 4,5,6+ hours a day just driving from one service call to the next and just the fact that top speed is maybe 60mph downhill and 45,50 uphill makes me like even more cause I'm always gettin passed by air heads when I'm going 70mph cause all the other traffic is going that fast....In a 55mph ZONE!

I've been driving for 21 years and ZERO accidents and 1 speeding ticket at 16 (who hasn't?)

Double clutch....No problem! just means that the airhead behind me with the cell phone in his ear has to wait :D

I REALLY do enjoy P&ss^ng off these people that think the highway is like a nascar race! R)R)

Btw if you pass a bright yellow jeep with a black grill I intentionally went slow R)R)

Back on topic, I went for a ride and practiced double clutching and it does stop the grinding, soo I guess I'll keep doing that till I can get the $$$$ for a rebuild (or untill it craps out) THANK YOU!

Well, I wasn't sure how to explain it so I asked my wife:shock::shock::oops:

She also helped her dad rebuild her fiat engine in high school. This was the same car that had a bad first gear synchro. I had a feeling she would know.
