I'm trying to remove the parking drum from the transfer case so I can put the parking brake shoes back on. I've dropped the front end of the rear driveshaft and am trying to break loose the nut that holds the drum and driveshaft flange to the rear of the TC.

The nut is tight engouh that the drum rotates when I try to loosen it. I put the TC into 4-wheel low and the tranmission into 1st hoping that would give enough resistance. I'm able to more torque on the wrench but it still moves. I've also tried gipping the drum with my free hand but with the confined quarters and lost leverage that's not getting it done also.

I felt behind the drum and have not been able to feel anything that I can wedge a screwdrive behind to block it. I tried putting a pipe wrench on the drum but the only place I can secure the wrench to blocks the wrench handle against the skid plate which starts to bend.

I don't have an impact wrench to try. Can anyone please tell me what the proper technique is to lock up the drum in order to loosen the nut?

    Don,

Not sure why it won't break loose for you, I recently had mine off, and although snug, it did come loose. Might try soaking it with penetrating oil for a couple of days, heat, or impact as you suggested. Speaking of e brake installation, Im working mine as well...any pics you might be able to provide on the e brake arm assembly and how it all hooks up would be great. Thanks, and good luck.....

    You need a impact gun.

    Norm,

Here's scan from my M38A1 Operation and Organiztional Maintenance manual (TM 9-8014) that shows the assembly diagram and has the assembly instructions. I hope it's clear enough to decipher. Let me know if you need something more legible and I will try to convert it to a pdf at work tomorrow.

I got a cheapo impact gun (electric) from Harbor Freight. As stated above, that's usually what you need to break that nut loose. To tighten it, I put the T-case in 4wd low, tranny in 1st and chock the wheels.

Put the front driveshaft back in, lock the hubs and put it in gear. Use wheel chocks, or put the Jeep up against a solid wall. Don't laugh, it works!)
