Usually when I start my '80 Cj5 258, It has a extrememly high rev like I have my foot on the gas, it soon goes away when I tap the gas. It only does this if it has been sitting for a couple hours. I am still learnin carb. motors so this may be normal but was wondering if it was or part of the reason since I have it running very rich, PO did this and I am planning on replacig the carb once I can afford a halfway decent one.

Also another question, about the E-brake, is ther a way to see if it fully dis-engaging. It just feels like it is still a tiny bit engaged when I am starting out cant really describe the feeling it just dont feel right.

Sounds like high idle cam is sticking.

Sounds normal. Engine sits, gets cold, choke closes partway. Start it up and tap the gas to release the high idle cam.

:iagree: Got a brand new carb that does same thing. Factory high idle is 1200RPM, then tap gas and drops right off. Curb idle 500-700 RPM.

For summer you can turn down the high idle screw alittle, then when it starts getting cold out you may have to bump it up again.

The cold idle uses a cam attached to the choke. This is adjustable via a screw at the bottom of the carb. If you believe the cold idle is too high, adjust it down.
As for the E brake, you can jack up the rear and check to see if the brakes are dragging. Most times this caused by a cable sticking. You can crawl under the rig and manually pull on each cable to see if it returns smoothly.

Could also be the bimetal spring in the choke cover isn't strong enough to pull the choke off of the fast idle stop. Those are known to wear out, and are an easy parts store item.
