I hava a T 86 and a dana 18 behind a 69 cj5. I like to know if it is possible that the oil from the transmission can flow to the transfercase. Is there a oilseal between them? This because I had 2 liters oil out of the transfercase, witch is more the the standard specifications.

    Thanks in advance

Very common "problem"...I think most people (myself included) just tolerate it. If you're serious about stopping the oil sharing between the two, I recall a thread here not too long ago about plugging an oil gallery in the D18 transfer, but try searching the forum...never know what you'll find!

Agreeing with everybody, yes they share oil ,and additionally, no, no seal. The oil can go through the bearing, but not very quickly. No way to block it AFAIK.

    The T-98, T-18 and T-150 do have a seal - and I expect the SR-4, T-4, T-5 and T-176 do to. The oil transfer only applies to the Borg-Warner 3-speeds: T-84, T-90, T-86, T-14 and T-15.

I tore down a T-90 out of a '47 one time that had a rear bearing retainer that had a seal in it for the output shaft - saved it around here somewhere for future reference. When I rebuilt it at first I did a lot of hunting for a seal number but couldn't find a P/N or any reference to it in any manual anywhere. None of the other T-90 had one in them so installed it in my jeep w/o the seal. Haven't had any problems.

On my Commando the t86 was bad and it pumped all the metal shavings into the transfercase:rofl:

So I would rather have them not share if I had a choice.. IMO

I just did some work to my '76 T-150/D20 and learned that mine share oil; both had a port. Had a bad front yoke output shaft seal on the t-case that just kept pouring oil out until the transmission was almost dry. Figure it's how the PO shredded the one that was in the vehicle when I got it.

The problem I have with sharing the common oil is that the transmission is always low and the transfer case is always over full. And since it likes to leak, no matter how I try, it makes an oily mess. Not to mention the concern of running out of oil in the trans.
Should the seperate oil levels stabilize as you drive? It seem that they get unbalanced when it is parked.

Slam on the brakes real hard and the oil will flow back to the transmission.R)
Seriously though the leaking can be stopped or slowed to a drip. The oil sharing is more a matter of how full and the way the transmission gears pump it. Mainly to the transfercase. You may need to seperate them and try to stop or slow the leaks so that over filling a little is not a big issue.
