My CJ5 has me pretty baffled. I thought it was a '75. I still think most of it is. But something I ran across here in Early CJ5 has me confused. As you can see in the attachments, it has the under seat gas tank as well as passenger rear tank. There is a switch between the front seats for selecting the tank in use. IIRC, they stopped the under seat tank in 71 or so. Yet everything else seems to say 75. The matching vins on both the dash label as well as the engine firewall are 75. Has the 304, D44 in rear, D30 in front, and D20 tc. What do you guys think? Doesn't this have to be an older tub?

I cant help you identify, but thats kind of a cool option. You always have extra gas.

I'm always filling the 11 gal underseat tank in my cj.

11 gal dosent get you very far with a 304.

Or you just had a PO with some skillz....wouldn't be that hard to install a filler neck and tank from an ECJ into a '75...

The location of the Jeep script on the side changed for late 74, that would be one way to identify a 75 tub. One area you might investigate.

    Nice Jeep.

Yep, I did that to my '73 in '73. Very common.

Thanks much. Makes sense. Only wished he had used those skillz on some of the other problems too!

Thats pretty cool. The PO probably did'nt want to deal with jerry cans on those long trails. Sounds like you should have about 27 Gal. combined capacity.

Another way to tell if a stock '72-'75 tub is if it has the heater grill in the cowl. '71 and older didn't have those......

My 75 has both tanks. I took the one out from under the seat because I had a lot of rewiring to do. I just am not too comfortable sitting on 10 gallons of excitement. It may find its way back in there someday.

I think it's funny how everyone is uneasy about sitting on the gas tank. How many million Jeeps were made like that? How many million went through WW2 and Korea where bullets were flying around? Anyone ever heard of somebody blowing up with their gas tank? I haven't. Seems like if your tank does decide to go ka-blooey it wouldn't matter if it was under you or a foot behind you in the bed, you'd be a goner regardless.

Millions of Ford, Chevy and Dodge pickups were made with the tank in the cab behind the seat. Never heard of one of them going up in flames either.

I personally prefer the tank under the seat cause if something a catasprophic as the tank exploding were to occur, it's a quicker death
Unfortunaly most tanks don't explode like in the movies, the tank usually ruptures and the fuel is ignited:rofl:

I didn't mind so much sitting on it - it was always a great way to prevent people from smoking...;)

What I did mind was when it leaked...it ruined alot of stuff inside the Jeep.

I also greatly appreciated the reclaimed interior storage space when I had my CJ5 yet and moved the tank under the rear end.

Now on the 6, after moving the gas tank out I have such a plethora of storage space I'm going to mount a small RV water tank under the driver's seat...:)

I can't remember the source but I remember reading once the under the seat configuration was an intentional failsafe the military wanted. In such a small vehicle there are limited places the fuel tank could be installed. Rather than placing it where it might be exposed to gunfire it's "shielded" by the driver with the thinking it's better to lose 1 soldier than risk an explosion that endangers everyone. Placing it under any other seat would leave it partially exposed if the particular seat was vacant. Since the driver's seat would always be in use that was the place chosen. I can only assume armor shielding was not an option due to weight consideration.

I'm not claiming this to be the gospel truth so if anyone else can either dispel this idea or support it feel free to chime in.

at least Jeep didn't have the Pinto problems, even with the Jeep tank being moved to the rear.
It's never bothered me, never a worry here.
And I was riding shotgun in a CJ that the drivers tank did catch fire in/on.
Jeep stalled out going up a steep dune; while on the side of the dune, carb flooded and had gas coming out the open headers with flames; the cure is to fire the Jeep to blow out the flames; before that could happen, the gas dripping from the drivers under seat tank caught fire. Driver grabbed the fire extinguisher from on top the tank and put it out. No biggie.
Did I mention I was only 11 or 12 years old and exited the Jeep in nanoseconds?

About 20 years ago at TDS Desert Safari my FIL's 69 CJ5 slurped gas out of the underseat tank when he was on a slope. Normally not a problem but this occurence was a perfect storm as the Jeep backfired at the same time. Seeing as his exhaust was right below you can only imagine the outcome. It went up quick with no time to grab the extinguisher and everything went. Even the steering wheel was just a piece of wire.

It happened at the begining of the Sunday morning ride. My wife and I were leaving camp early and saw smoke coming from the trail and commented to each other that someone was not having a good day. Found out that night it was him.

looking at the picture of that 75 cj5 the back tank doesnt look original cuz the filler hose is on the side and not the back of the jeep
