Newbie Engine ?

Hi everyone! I just purchased a '75 CJ5.

The previous owner put a straight 6 in it. What engine is this or how do I find out....

Its not a crate engine. And the age seems to be that of a '75.

Also the Hubs are shot. is this an easy/cheep fix?

 

stock engine in a 75 could be any one of the following depending on options.
232 I-6
258 I-6
304 V-8

 

SHouldn't it say on the side of the block???

once you get past the intimidation factor... the hubs are a piece of cake!

i was in mine 4-5 times over the course of 2 days... it was ALMOST fun in a sick and twisted kind of way...

IMO a book is the best thing to have with you when you rip it open... my pages are already tattered and greasy... just the way i like em!

If it's an AMC 6 (likely), there will be numbers stamped into the block below and between the #3 & #4 spark plugs. You can decode the engine displacement and build date from the stamped number. Post it up.

I have seen Jeeps with swapped in Chevy and Ford I-6's before but I would go as far as to say it's certainly not common by any means. The best bet is that it's an original AMC 258.

OK, I was told by the previous owner it was a 232. A Jeep enthusiast I ran into said its a 258. Stamped on the block is H6 3218618.
Stamped on the headers is DN3225202-1

321xxxx and 322xxxx look like AMC numbers? I expect they are cast in, not stamped.

See my post above. You need the stamped number from the location I mention. It'll be something like "02 C 325".

Well Timgr from your post I have a 1974 232 built on March 26th? Is that right?

I have a '74 232 in a '75 CJ5 is that common?

 

Don't know how common it is, but the build date for the engine has to precede the build date for the whole Jeep. Warehousing an engine for several months wouldn't be desirable (for Jeep), but maybe not surprising for the 232. Where I worked they sold very few 232s, since the 258 option was pretty cheap IIRC. What's your VIN? Do you have the yellow dash sticker?

 

I just looked as a few things. 2 Owners ago someone swapped engines.

Is the '74 232 exactly like the '75 232? IE. Do I have to be careful odering parts?


BTW. I really appreciate your help. I have big plans for this little jeep. My wallet can't keep up with my ideas.

 

The only difference I'm aware of would be the rocker arms. For a while in 1974, Jeep changed from stamped to cast rockers, then back to stamped. That won't matter unless you rebuild the engine and you need to replace the rockers, pushrods or cylinder head - then you'll need to match the build date to the catalog info. If you swap cylinder heads, pretty sure you'll have to go with the design that the head came with (ie rockers and pushrods), otherwise they will be interchangeable.

 

I thought all 258's had an "H" stamp on the side of the block? Or did I just dream that?

 

I don't know about the engine specs but I'm a 1975 owner myself and I would have to say that from the pics you posted your jeep looks newer. The rear taillights and gas filler is kind of indicative of the newer, post 76 style body as far as I know. I could be totally wrong but check to see if you can find vin #'s anywhere.
